Fitting a tachometer to 3.3 blue engine

I drive a 1958 Land Rover with a beautifully rebuild 3.3 litre blue engine fitted. I decided to install a simple VDO tachometer to keep an eye on the revs when on the highway. The installation went really well. The only problem is that the rev counter won't count revs! It has juice so I figure the issue concerns the connection to the coil. The coil is a Bosch HEC 716. Can anyone advise me on how to connect the tacho to the coil?

Much appreciated.

WTB: Plastic indicator cancel plate for 70s/80s Holdens

It seems you can get a reproduction unit for the early-70s vehicles, but I cannot find the plastic indicator cancel assembly that sits inside the steering wheel for anything after '72. I put a request out on Findapart, but no interest there.

Mine's been AWOL since I bought the vehicle (UC Torana). From what I can tell, it's the same part from the HQ all the way through to the VL.

Need some advice

Hi all, I am currently restoring a VH Commodore and I need some advice on what I can do to the blue 3.3ltr engine to turn it into a performance engine. I have had a suggestion of throwing a yella terra head on it, larger cam, solid lifters, extractors, and a set of triple SU carbie's, is this an option?

3.3 Varajet carb problems

Hey everyone

Been tasked with the job of wiring up a 3.3 HEI engine at school. All is going well, ready to put the wires on. Only one problem, the carb isn't working. The engine hasn't been started in something like 5-10 years. Changed all the fluids etc.

Today I was fiddling around with the carb, testing the chokes and such. The throttle plate under the choke was working great until it suddenly got stuck open and then slammed and refuses to open again.

Anyone got suggestions to try. I will be working on it in about a weeks time so I can't really get pics.

Ignition Fuse Blowing

Have purchased a car with unknown issues (79 VB Commodore RED 202), replaced yellow ignition switch to coil wire and pink ballast resistor wire from ignition switch to coil upgraded to thicker wire due to both being extremely heat damaged.
HEI distributor looks in order, plugs and leads fine.
Had to earth alternator to engine in order to get it charging and have charge light work with ignition on, now charging and showed around 14.5 volts on the dash until ignition feed fuse blew.

There was a steady kind of buzz noise coming from the upper dash area until the fuse blew but the car drove fine, fuse blows and then the noise stops plus charge light came on and engine pinged like crazy under load.

HEI setup and charge issue Red 202

Will try to keep this as brief as possible...
Purchased a VB Commodore with swapped over engine, old engine was points but this one is HEI and didn't have the wiring updated. The yellow and pink resistor wire have heat damage and fused together so they're both currently removed.

From here can anyone recommend a straight forward setup to run the HEI???

Also an issue is the charge light on the dash is not working and the battery is getting no charge, so the motor runs weak until the battery dies. The bulb is good and I can't see any other wire damage.

starfire conrods vs standard 6cyl rods

ok,
what is the specs for starfire conrods, vs standard conrods, to suit a blue 202. are they longer, chunkier, heavier, do I need to offset the gudgeon pin so the pistons dont smack into the head if I use the starfire rods.
I want as much info as possible please so if anyone can help out here, that would be great
...I added pics of the rods i have, one set i bought as starfire rods and have a little extra length to them

An unhappy Holley AKA silver linings

Some of you may remember a question I posted the other week about what to do with the Holley whose fuel intake port I cracked while tightening up the fuel line. There was much cursing at myself, but I actually found some brand new fuel bowls on Ebay and got one of those for $90 including shipping. Cheaper than a new carbie.

Mechanic fits it today, and called me at the office to say that the lining in the old fuel bowl was peeling off, and the fact I stripped the intake was fortunate since we replaced the bowl before any bits had a chance to fall off and choke a jet!

Have a look at the attached pics to see the lining peeling off. Seems to be lifting due to pressure from underneath, not that the lining itself is too worn or etched by something swirling around on top of it.

Cracked the #@ $#% carbie

So I was installing a new water temp sender in the head and noticed the inlet pipe into the carbie looked a bit loose. Gave it a (gentle!) nip in, only to hear a slight "crack". Hm, spanner came off then, must've been that. Turned the engine on to test the seal on the temperature sender, and looked at it only to see fuel spewing out of the 3mm crack that's now appeared in the carb body by the inlet. Turned the engine off quick smart.

Two questions:

1. Possible to repair? Since the thing is cast, I assume not, but you never know.

With that much crud on the valve gear how much lies inside the Lifters ... ?

In My Day ...

... You didn't have an abundance of Batteries, so you didn't crank them flat and *then* try to figure out why the engine didn't start.

It fires on the Aerostartyoubugoff, but has not yet pulled through fuel.

Little point in cranking until the Battery flattens. Jeff Bradshaw would hold the Aerostartyoubugoff into the carb mouth until the revs pick up or fill the float chamber through the breather.

Leaving the PCV unplugged isn't going to help either ...

Why bother casting 3.3 into the block and call them 202's?

Dramas fitting replacement water temp sender

I'm having a few dramas fitting a new water temp sender on what I think is a WB motor (engine number is correct), which has been painted red. (WB 6s are blue?) It's fitted into my UC Torana.

The problem I'm trying to solve is the temp reads very high on the gauge - starts warming up till it hits 1/4, then quickly jumps to 1/2 (no transition), and then "operates" at 7/8 of the dial. Seems like the sender isn't correct, and from what I can tell, it should be a VDO 320.003 (with the white ring at the top). Current unit has a black ring.

So I tried replacing it, and the unit wouldn't screw in at all - thread too large? Tried refitting the old one and now coolant is leaking out of where the unit slots in - this started me thinking the fitting is "non-standard".
