Checking current from alternator to battery
By HZCambridge 09/02/12@19:07 Shed LetsCruise N.Z.Was concerned how much current was being drawn from my alternator with both the electric fan and high beam lights (2 x 150watt spots on the inside pair).
Whole shooting match drew 51 amps at about 3000 rpm, so I think that a 100 amp alternator will be on my shopping list..
This bad boy meter which is a DC Clip on Amp meter just clips around the cable from the alternator to the battery and records the maximum current.
T you can add this piccy to the "pedia if you want.

Headlights not working
By ReaperHR 30/01/12@09:34 Shed 4153Had a problem last night where the wife was trying to come home from work and her headlights wouldn't work. Then they did work, then they didn't work. I got her to follow me home and I watched as her headlights went out then came back on and stayed on the rest of the way home. I thought it was the dimmer switch so this morning I turned them on (working) turned them off and put a brand new dimmer switch in, now they aren't working at all, unless I hold the dimmer switch on. I know this is an issue I've had before with cars and I'll be damned if I can remember what the issue was.
hz cuts out sometimes causing worry and pain
By oldhzdude 27/01/12@17:45 Shed 4350hey Holden folk, can anyone shed some light on why the ute is cutting out please.....These are the symptoms
202 engine, Starts and runs, misses a bit, then cuts out all of a sudden.
hard to start then will start with full choke and pumpinmg throttle 5-6 times. Runs for a few seconds then drops out.
Sometimes runs with misses and engine revs change without moving throttle
.sometimes will idle fine and then cuts out under load or up hills.
Thought it may be points so changed them ove to the HEI setup I removed last week thinking that was the problem....no change to symptoms.
wiring lights in gauges
By TUFFVB 25/01/12@21:14 Shed LetsCruise 2152Hi all,
Putting a few gauges in the VB today and got a bit stuck when it came to wiring the lights in the gauges. I wasnt sure which wire the headlights ran off so I tried to have a look up under the dash and i popper the headlight switch out as far as i could pull it and all i could see was grey wire after grey wire running off it. There was heeps of them.
Does anybody know what wire to wire them off? I take it its the park lights one but which wire is that?
Accodring to the gregories manual the wires for the right park lights and headlamps are a brown wire and the left are a red wire.
Am i meant to wire them off one of these?
If someone could please point me in the right direction here it would be great as i'm quite confused.
Cheers

HZ ignition problem
By wildshotz 23/01/12@21:50 LetsCruise 5016Hi all.
When I turn the key to the "on" or accessories, the starter wants to start the car. If I turn the key all the way (so I have spring resistance) it stops.
I have an MSD ignition system installed 6al, dizzy and coil. I have wired that up correctly and tripled checked. I have replaced the ignition switch as I thought that may be the problem and have tried it in all possible positions slide back and forth to desired So shaft has full range position and tighten with the 2 bolts that attach it on the steering column.
Aftermarket tacho queries
By a Holden Fan o.O 19/01/12@20:00hi everyone,
I got an autometer 5 inch tacho for xmas for my car. The one I got is part of the ultralite series and has a 2 stage shift light. This is the one:
http://shop.rocketin...
It maybe a dumb question, but do I have to wire it up as a 2 stage shift light, or can I just wire it up like a normal tacho and shift light?
Thanks

Wanting to know wiring colours for temp gauge replacement. Hx tonner
By Craigmil 11/01/12@18:11 2360Hi
I'm only new here as Ive just picked up the tonner (HX red motor 202). I have waited to get for 6 years.
I have recently obtained a fuel/Temp gauge to replace the fuel/temp light. The problem is that the previous owner had put gauges in and disconnected the temp light wiring under the bonnet. The closest wires which had been cut and left were a pale yellow and black which connecting them one at a time did not work. I got the same as another member the gauge moved when starting engine but then moved back to its origonal spot. Can it be done and can someone tell me what colours the wiring should be?
As the temp light ran off a solenoid and the gauge runs off a single wire do I have to earth out the remaining wire to make sure the gauge is earthed?

removing a snapped bolt
By TUFFVB 09/01/12@23:22 Shed LetsCruise 2152Hi all,
I have myself a problem. When trying to remove the steering wheel a little while back on the VB i snapped a bolt in half (one of the bolts for the steering wheel puller). Its not stuck IN the stering wheel and i have no idea how to get it out. I did worry about it at the time as i wasnt putting a sport steering wheel on until after rego but now I need to pull it off to change the blinker assembly.
Any ideas and help is much appreciated.

Head lights issue.
By HRDan 02/01/12@22:21Hey guys, Happy New Year!
I've been having some head light troubles and had two questions.
Firstly, would a small amount of wear on a wire such that you can see exposed wire be enough to cause the head lights to cut out intermittently? I have taken some photos and attached them to this post (apologies for the quality).
Secondly, I cannot remove the frayed wire from the head light switch box without using what I consider excessive force to fix it, is there a trick that I'm missing?
cheers, Dan.

Troubleshooting
By ReaperHR 08/12/11@20:55 Shed 4153Got a problem with the HR at the moment, the generator light is staying on when it feels like it. When testing, it'd start perfectly and run fine, but when the generator light came on the engine revs would drop slightly i.e. like it was under a load, when it went off the revs went back to normal again. I thought maybe something was running and causing a short so I unplugged the stereo and everything related, the turbo timer etc and no effect.
VL Intrumrnt Cluster
By barneymutt 08/12/11@11:45Could someone please tell me if the VL instrument clusters will interchange without mods?
I have a clock in mine that has stopped working and was wondering if the tacho model will just plug in and work.
If not then I'll look for another clock.
Thank you
Gary
HEI wiring
By HJDave 02/12/11@14:32 LetsCruise NZ,Hey all, I fitted a Bosch dizzy recently, went in easy, started striaght away, has been better than the twin point. I have been reading a lot on the wiring to deliver 12 volts to the coil (HEC716) and there are different views on how to achieve it. I've just measured the voltage, ignition 'on', and have 11.98v. All I have done was to cut the pink ballast resistor wire out from under the dash, as it was melting anyway. No large wires fitted, no diodes, no relays... just removed the pink wire. Any thoughts on this? Have I stumbled on the easiest option? Whaddayoureckon?
Headlight solenoid
By forunna 28/11/11@23:59 Shed 6122There appears to be no solenoid running my headlights in my HG.
Does all the current go through the dash switch and dimmer switch?
if so is it a good idea to put a couple of solenoids in? just cut into each wire before the headlights? one for high and one for low.
is there a neater option than the little Hella cubes screwed to the inner guard?
take power from starter motor terminal?
