304 and 308 physical differences

Gday boys.

Determining whether a block is a 304 or a 308 is pretty easy if the engine number is there still. But when it's gone what's some ways of telling the blocks apart? I mean apart from if it had 5.0 on cast in the side of one and 308 on the other.

HQ Stromberg Bits Needed!

Hey everybody. I've been having trouble with my worn out accelerator linkages in my HQ so I've decided to go to a cable instead.

The problem is, the bracket you get in the aftermarket kits (Rare Spares etc) seems to be for the V8 engine and I can't find anywhere to attach it. I'm trying to track down some old cable-type strombergs or bits so I can salvage the brackets and suchlike that I need.

Can anyone help me out or suggest someone who can?? (I live in Brisbane but I'm willing to pay for postage/go for a drive)

Thanks!

Temp Light

decided to take the HR for a run today through hills. It was about 35 degrees. Checked coolant before heading off. Car ran well - considering it's the original 50 year old engine having never been reconditioned or head removed. On way home after about 3 hours I took her up to about 65-70 - whereas she normally feels content about 55. After sometime the temp light came on - so slowly pulled to the side and was prepared to turn engine off an let cool down - but the light went off - so dropped back to 55 and never came on again all way home.

161 HG ENGINE

I am looking for the original engine from my HG Panel Van. It was removed form my Van in 1980 and was later that year fitted to a HR Panel Van with the rego number JTR 325. I have a copy of the original Victorian rego card for my Van showing the rego number of KST 093, Chassis Number HG 00013A and Engine Number 161H322145. I also have a pic of the rego card for the HR Van showing when my engine was fitted to it.
If you or anyone you know have a HR Van that previously had that rego number (the rego number is no longer in use)check your engine number? Please.......

Nine year old engine advice

I have found a cheap 202 motor that has not been started in over nine years.
I need some advice on what to do before trying to start it....
I was thinking maybe take the plugs out get some really thin oil to shoot down there and turn it over by hand very slow just to get the pistons oiled again.
Is this feasible?
Also anything else people suggest that I should possibly do?
Regards.

Fuel spitting from 202 carter indicator hole

Hey guys, as above, I've just noticed some fuel spitting from the indicator hole on the rear side of the carter pump.
Just for some reassurance, would that be a fingered diaphragm? I've had a look at the handy holdenpaedia page already :)

And if it is, anybody know of a decent shop in Perth that would carry that sort of stock?

Cheers for any advice,
Rhys

FX-FJ Motor

Can anyone tell me why the 1953-63 grey motor
harmonic balancer is different to the pre 1953?

Is this how you tell the difference between a
132.5 from an FJ and a 132.5 from an FX? Are
there any other obvious differences?

253 rebuild/big ends

My red 253 needs big ends refreshed.

As I have never done any major engine work before, I am wondering how difficult this can be.

Its not a matching numbers car, so would it be better to source a replacement reco motor?

Have looked at engine stands to do the work. But am sceptical about the stands moving/rolling under pressure from loosening and tightening components. Does this occur?

69 HT heater core

Greetings folks,

Hope someone can give some suggestions on either repairing or replacing the heater core.

Is there a alternative japanese or euro heater core which would fit without much fuss or better to have the original redone.

I don't much worry if its a jap core as its only hot air.

Appreciate your time....

for HZ308

Yep, I have to take the manifolds off to get the starter out.
Under the carbies is a set of extractors, under them is the starter.
It won't come out from under the extractors, I've tried.
I've tried from underneath the car and it can't be done.

cooling system clean

Hi all;

Would someone be able to advise the best way to clean a Grey Motor cooling system?

The water in mine is muddy brown with a bit of sediment floating in it and I'm about to give it a flush. I've heard that it's best to steer clear of the cleaners as they're a bit savage.

Also, could anyone recommend a good additive for the water?

Any advice much appreciated - thanks in advance!

Tony EJ

Electronic ignition

Converting 186 standard ignition to electronic with a distributor from a VC Commodore. Does it matter if the distributor is from a 2.85 or 3.3 motor?
