What's that noise?

G day All!
I've got a problem with the steering in my car at low revs say parking or going round the corner the car will make a 'grrrr nawwwww grrrrr' noise. Now the belt is tight, and the pump is less than a year old. The rack is about 5 years old now. But I can't see any noticeable leaks. However I did notice that the fluid was a bit low... Say 150mls. But it seems to have tiny air bubbles in it. So... Is that the problem air? How do you bleed the air out of it? Also a general question in the steering racks, after 5 years do they just fail? Like a seal goes in them? I was told that every 5 years a guy I know would have to replace his whole rack. You could set your watch to it so to speak. Is there any truth to that?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Cheers guys

HK idler arm - HELP!

Yo!

Any man and his dog has been able to sell me an Idler Arm Support Bracket - the component that bolts to the left side chassis rail - and I have a new one ready to fit.

What I REALLY need is the Idler Arm itself - with sort of male and female ends - that is linked to the Support Bracket and the left end of the Drag Link respectively.
Mine is totally flogged and the steering is increasingly dodgy.

Problem is, I can't find one ANYWHERE!

Do any OldHoldeners here know who might make, sell &/or rebuild such a thing?

Ta heaps for any tips!

HK'ing.

power steering ram

power steering ram

after a year of trouble with the ram power assisted steering on my hg brougham (it was too light)
& no one knowing how to work on it...I ended up buying a new ram from holdenmanrestomotive@gmail.com for $314.00 delivered. My husband replaced it quite easily, all he had to do was purchase a tie-rod remover from super cheap auto for around $30.00. Problem solved.
It drives brilliant. Hope this info can help some one else..

Tie rod end

I have determined that the steering arms I had in a previous post are modified HQ.
The next question is does anyone know which tie rod end will fit the smaller HQ taper and retain the HR style male thread?

VK Power Steering Tension and Strange Sound

Hi... I've got a VK 308 with a power steering squeal that won't go away. It has a brand new power steering pump on with Gilmer drives and the belt's been replaced a couple of times. A bit of belt grip seems to do the trick for a while, but when you're going towards full lock the squeal is back after a week or so. This is driving me crazy! Should I get a shorter belt and clean the pulleys with metho? I'm pretty sure the alignment is fine.

Also... There's a strange knocking/rattle type noise from somewhere at the front (i think) of the car that only seems to happen on deceleration and braking. When i've got my foot on the gas it's fine. Any ideas? U-joint?

what are these off?

what are these off?

Need help identifying these steering arms, they were bolted onto a HR front end, HR tie rod ends have a bigger taper and dont fit the hole. The taper appears to be the same as HQ style joints, they are not HQ as they dont have a cast in steering stop.
From the research i have done it appears they may be HG or HT? From what i can see the taper may have down sized during the HK run.
If they are HT I also want to know if the HT tie rod ends have a male thread to screw into a female tie rod?
The part number is not very clear but may start with with 94 and appears to end in 12.

Lower Ball Joints

Hey Guys
Just wanted thoughts on what i just did, to avoid removal of my lower wishbones to press new ball joints i slightly and neatly oversized the the holes
with a barrel grinder and madeshift pressed them with the slight assistance off a lump hammer and large socket. Question being will they hang in there it wont be driven much more of a monthly Sunday drive car. Again thanks for any feedback. Jonesy

Shocking Suspension...

So I accidently hit a pothole on the way home from work this avo.. Only a little one but when I drove up the driveway I hear a big clunk. I had a quick look underneath and noticed the shock is dangling loosely below the wishbone!!!! I didnt investigate much more cos it was pissing down rain but I'll be havin a good tinker tomorrow. It looks like the 2 bolts that go through the lower mounting pin have either snapped or loosened off. Anyone know the size of these 2 bolts? Or any advice if ya think I've got it wrong?

HR ball joints

Well, a thorough search of all posts regarding ball joints and tie rods has left me in great doubt. Did we ever decide / agree on which brand were worthy of our money? We're talking a stock HR front end here, no lowerage, disc brakes, bags, low profile tyres, 93-inch rims, nothing.

What I'm chasing is for folks to say "yes Matt, you handsome devil. I use this brand of balljoint. Purchase, install and be happy with your larger-than-average penis size."

What's not going to help anyone are any of the following:

"BJ54 and BJ55 are the best, but they've been unobtainable since 1883"
"I bought 400 NOS balljoints in 1976, that's all I use, and no you can't have any"
"WASP are really crappy but they used to be good, but they're not now but they were"

Tie rod end identification

I have a couple of tie rod ends in boxes. One says TE189R (looks like HT?) and the other GIR 173R (girlock brand - possibly valiant?). They are both old. Can anyone assist to confirm what they would be for? Thanks.

Wheels on One Tonners - Alloys are illegal.

Am just about ready to register our hq one tonner, here in Qld. We were going to be using welds on it, but a mate told me today that it wouldnt make it through inspection as rims need to be load rated and should be steel? Where do you find what weld wheels are load rated too, Ive seen plenty of utes with alloys on them. Any clues please.

Hg steering column problems.

Having a problem with my HG's steering column. The steering shaft is pulling in and out of the steering column and the only thing that is keeping it from yanking all the way out is the coupling that connects to the steering box.

Is there meant to be something that stops the bearing in the top of the switch assembly from being able to pull out???
