OOOPS

Big oooops had to make a quick dash up to noosa yesterday to get the Boy from a school camp where he got sick, as I was already on Nth side of Brissy I raced up in my work ute, and being the concerned parent I sat on 110kmh on the highway where as I would rarely go above 95 to 100 as the old girl just simply don't like it, made Drs appointment as well and it was always gunna be tight, so basically 4 hours of 100kmh or plus driving.

engine treatments like slick 50 etc good / bad?

I added some slick 50 to my red v8 about 18/20 years ago after hearing the "near frictionless" sales pitch.
Today the engine is pulled down and some rings have been sticking which explains the fouling spark plug problem i've been having with one of the cylinders. Everything else about the engine is fine so will just hone the bores and sort the rings.
Any recomendations in using an additive like this or better than slick 50?
Or should I just keep a regular service schedule up to it once its going again?
Thoughts/ comments from past experience welcome.

Alloytec servicing

Here is a pic of three Alloytec oil filters and its obvious to see why the motor will fail when taken beyond its specified service interval.
first one is a new filter, second is a filter at the 15k service interval, the third was run to 2k over the service interval.
Delaying a service is false economy.

Rear main oil seal

Hi people I recently put a new gasket kit thru my 253{abt 2 months ago} now I find that I am losing oil thru the rear main seal,{lots} I know that there are two types of seals, rope and neoprene, the seal I put in was the neoprene type as the guy at repco said there was no difference, could he be wrong and have I put the wrong seal in? One other question , is it possible to replace the seal without taking the engine out? Thanks for any info guys.

Spigot Bush

A helpful tip!
Just a thought but given that there are pictures of spigot bush's on the front page, I hope that you guys that are rebuilding engines and replacing clutch's know that the spigot bush is made of sintered bronze.
Sintered bronze is porous and used because of it's ability to stay lubricated for many years.
The bush should be soaked in oil overnight or have oil forced through it before installation.
I always have a few spares in the shed and they are stored in a jar of oil.

What type of oil for 186

What type / brand of engine oil would be recommended for a 186s engine. I am hoping just to clean it up, new gaskets etc and away we go. I think it has done 68000 miles.

Wheel Bearings

Can someone give me the method for greasing front and rear wheel bearings on the car for an EJ? The manual is a bit vague on the subject. Cheers

Which Oil?

Hi blokes,

Which grade engine oil should I use in my old 186 red motor?

I have a few (new, unopened) containers of Valvoline XLD 20W-50. Two are marked as "Premium" and one is marked as "Classic".

Is there any difference?

Thanks in advance.

Gearbox oil - 3sp crash box

Just had my HD sedan's g'box rebuilt & deciding what oil to use.
Penrite recommend HPR30 (engine oil) for partial synchro boxes.
Anyone heard of this / used this before??
I would have though it's a bit light...

Oil level

I was reading the warranty conditions of my motor and first oil change
I need to add 7qt oil to the motor run it to get pressure and shut it down wait 30min with the car on level ground and mark the dipstick and that will be its level for life

I was interested and started to look on some chev forums in the states

I always thought high volume oil pans were to hold more oil but I have learnt today that they are also used for other reasons to keep the same amount of oil originally for that motor at a lower level to stop it hitting the crank

When I brought a sump from high energy for the eh 186 motor I never thought to ask the question of what the oil level should be
I have the motor topped up to the level the dip stick was with a standard sump
