Oils aint oils

What oil is the best for a 192? I have been using HPR30 but when it gets hot the oil pressure drops heaps. So can anyone recommend something better?

Auto replacement....

G'day folks....

A good mate has decided to pull his HZ ute out of the shed and get her back on the road...woohoo!!!! We spent the weekend getting her running again - and as you'd expect with an old holden, after 12 months in the shed, we whacked in a new battery and she came to life after two or three cranks - as she fired we cheered and decided to have another stubby!

A quick zip up and down the road also fired up my mates memory...he needs to replace the auto...we are planning on doing it ourselves and I was wondering if someone could give me some tips on doing it...any info or pointers would be much appreciated...thank you in advance and have a damn fine day!!!

pinging driving me insane

hey fellas
My car will ping when i put the foot down over half ive tried adjusting the timing 1000 times and hasnt helped... basically when i get the timing to the point where it doesnt ping it will misfire instead...

what can cause pinging?

car otherwise has no other problems, cooling etc

im thinking the fuel is [Naughty Pottyword]house or maybe some1 previously might have upped the comp ratio on the motor never no...
any other sugestions?

cam gears

OK, im strating to pull apart my 202. first problem, how do i get the cam gear off? do i need a puller? just out of interest what are standard gears made of? mine apperears to be metal but i thought they were made of some other crap.

is it running to hot????

Hi guys:

My HR which is fitted with a black 202 shortmotor with the red head, water cooled 186S manifold. It does not run a thermo stat, Now when its about 24 degrees cel outside the temp gauge (VDO cockpit vision) sits on about 85-90 degrees. Should I pull a trailer, full or emty the gauge sits on a even 100 and, should also state that if we get a day like 30+ it will rise slightly over 100 on the gauge.
So is this running too hot, mind you it does not boil. I do run antifreeze/antiboil and the radiator was a brand new unit about 9 months ago.
anyone with ideas and thoughts please feel free to let me know. I'm not particully woried about it, but I just wonder though on real hot days.

5 speed help please

I could use a little help please. i have a celica 5 speed box in my EK. I've just had the tailshaft out and changed the uni joints. Not having a suitable plug I've let the gear oil drain out.
Now is the the correct fluid level:
(a) would be with the car elevated till the tailshaft is horizontal and and the gear oil to the level of the plug half way up the RHS of the box.
or
(b) car sitting normally and and the gear oil to the level of the plug half way up the RHS of the box.
or
(c)none of the above please explain

Straighten chassis

i recently crashed my hx ute and damaged all the front panels as well as slightly bending the chassis on the fron passenger side where the bumper connects. i have the new panels on their way and was just wondering if there is a cheap/DIY way of straightening the chassis. any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

TOO HOT?????

ok my gem keeps getting extremely hot, like the guage goes rite up near the H. and this can only take a 5min drive to do so, ive taken out the thermostat to see if that was a problem, and it still does it. it will sit near cold for a while then all of a sudden the temp will skyrocket for no reason. it hasnt actually overheated like blew its load or anything. any solutions,

and my car pings its ass off anything ova 4000rpm or on down gearchanges. sounds to me like really bad valves.

X2 carb's

Gidday Guys,

I will be fitting the X2 carbie set up to my EH ute this comimg weekend and I have a question Do I need to run a vacuum line from each carb and then Tee into the distributor? Or can I block the port on one carb and run a single line from the other carb? Shouldn't the vacuum be the same in one carb as in two? Any info greatly appreciated.

SMOKING HABBIT - Part 3

Ok guys, after getting the carby rebuilt, rejetted with 59's (was actuly running 51's) and having the powervalve replace, i took her for a spin yesterday morning, gave her abit of a kick and yep shes still smoking, didnt start smoking this time till about 4000rpm, but still, thick black smoke, and it felt like she was running lean at this point, also if it makes any sense, starting it had become a pain in the arss, ignition is great, starts firt turn of the key, but u can move off until shes warmed up enuff, which takes almost 5 minutes somtimes..... if u try and drop it into gear when its not warm, it just stalls...

Aussie 4 Speed troubles

Im haveing a bit of trouble with my Aussie 4 Speed gearbox. what happens is it will slip out of 1st every now and again, so i tighten up the linkages so it wont slip out of 1st but the problem is this pushes the 1st & 2nd shifter arm up so that whenever i go into reverse the shifter cant come back out.

I'm just wondering if this means the problem is inside the gearbox itself? and if it is what will most likely need replacing/adjusting inside the box? sorry if this is a stupid question but as you've probably noticed i'm just a newby to this stuff.

SMOKING HABIT----Part 2

Ok guys, had my 350 holley work done this morning, costed me $132, which included.... full overhaul, new power valve, dyno tune....and being jetted UP!!!! it turns out that it was running 51mm jets, the guys jetted it up to 59mm and tuned it lean, its runnning a [Naughty Pottyword] load smoother, tones more torque feels very good, the only problem is that after all that, i dont think the inital problem of black smoke will be fixed, i took it for a spin this arvo and i didnt notice any smoke nor smell the rich fuel mix, but then again, it wasnt a stinkinh hot day like it was the last times it started smoking, the carby bloke said it may be piston rings or oil rings, there seems to be a fair amount of oil on the sides of the block, (i believe my engine/gear box gasket is on its way out) how much would i be looking at if it is, gasp, worn out piston rings???

Brake hassles

I'm having problems with my HQ's brakes. When the engine is cold, brakes work fine. When the engine is hot they lose their power assistance - takes a lot of effort to stop the car. Pads look new. discs are not scored or anything and I've had a 2nd hand then a reco power booster fitted with no change. No blockage or leaks from the inlet manifold. It's weird, but it is related to engine heat. If the car's been left overnight it'll go about 3-4km (using brakes a lot or not at all) before the brakes go 'off', but if I leave it for,say, 3-4 hours then start it up I get maybe 300m before they go off.

Disc brakes

I have been having some problems with my dics brakes on my HQ ute (which has a 9" diff). It make a whining sound. I was told by the last owner that the brakes couldn't be adjusted unlees new pads where installed because they are like a worm setup this dosen't sound right to me.

HR Disc Brake Problems

I need some suggestions with my brakes, I've got some suspicions but I want other peoples opinions.

The problem is that my HRs front disc brakes don't seem to release properly, sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. They don't jam on but they just don't release properly, I've come home before and stunk out the whole house with the smell of cooking brake pads.

I've noticed when the car isn't started and I put my foot on the brake I can hear an expulsion of air, and it's not from me but rather it seems to come from the booster, I don't know if that's normal or not.

Any ideas anyone?

sideplate gaskets

where can i buy sideplate gaskets/seals (or whatever they are called). Just picked up my 202 from kik (thanks again mate) pulled off one of the side plates and wrecked the gasket, repco dont have them according to the guy i called before.

also, what do parts cleaners cost? are they worth having, i reckon it would be very handy to have. they are pretty basic, i could probly make one myself.

Blowin Smoke when changing gears

I've got a bit of a problem with my EH, The problem is when i change gears, the moment that the clutch is let out and accelerator is applied it blows a quick cloud of black/grey smoke. It doesn't blow smoke any other time. Also i have recently noticed tiny specs of black sh*t coming out of the exaust and onto the garage wall. any ideas or help would be much appreciated.
