number crunching wheel offsets AGAIN!!!!!!

I am reposting this AGAIN!!!

It is quite important to get the terminology correct when ordering or inspecting new wheels (or second hand)...Offset and Backspace are different terminologys that describe the same thing....Offset is the distance between the rims centreline and mounting face...if the mounting face is exactly in the middle, The wheel has zero Offset....If the mounting face is closer to the bacck off the rim/mag, The wheel is said to have negative offset....Naturally if the mounting face is further towards the front, then the wheel has a positive offset...Older cars (LIKE OLD HOLDENS) use negativley offset wheels (DEEP DISH)....While newer cars (LIKE COMMODORES) use a positivley offset wheel...Backspace is simply the measurement from the wheels/mag mounting face to the back off the rim/wheel.....PCD- pitch circle diameter is the imaginary circle that passes thru the centre of the wheels mounting holes....Falcon has a 5 on 114.3mm PCD while commodore has a larger 5 on 120mm...PCD is independent of the number of studs, you could have 4,5 or 6 stud wheels on the same PCD....Finally the last one is the wheel spigot or centre bore (THE HOLE IN THE BACK OF THE WHEEL)...The wheels spigot must fit the hub perfectly as it carries the cars weight-NOT THE WHEEL STUDS AS MANY PEOPLE BELIEVE!!!!! This is why older-style mag wheels that use shank lug nuts are illegal (even tho you can buy them)SO IF YOU ARE WONDERING IF YOUR MATES WHEELS OF HIS COMMODORE WILL FIT ON YOUR H SERIES HOLDEN....THE ANSWER IS NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!

Speedo Driven Gear

G'day,
Just wondering if any one can help me establish which driven gear ( the plastic gear cog thing at the gear box end of the speedo cable ) suits which diff ratio.I pulled a dark green one out of a hq with a m21 and a 3.36 diff, and am assuming it's only the diff ratio's that determine which colour driven gear is required. If anyone knows all the colours of driven gear there are and what they suit I would be very greatfull.
Any info at all appreciated.
Regards CQ Holden.

HOW TO: Diagnose and fix that rough idle

Ok, some thoughts and tips on the painful and elusive yet generally simple to fix problem of a rough as guts idle which makes your baby seem like the rusted out old crapbox that we all know it is not. I am attempting to explain the circumstances at engine idle, the systems used to make it work and some simple yet effective methods of getting yourself out of trouble. Please anyone feel free to correct me on any misinformation I may accidentally put down here.

Engines as many of us will know can be set up (mostly through valve timing) to be more efficient at different ranges of RPM's, the most ideal situation would be a motor moving at extremely low RPM with none of the adverse effects of high speed operation (but none of the benefits either) in which case the valve timing can be set to optimize low speed operation. This is however not the case for domestic vehicles and in order to get any power with some degree of economy we need to optimize a certain higher RPM range, this is generally NOT the idle speeds. To counter the problems of idle, being that low air velocity makes the fuel and air not mix properly, engine manufacturers generally (and still to this day) make the idle mixture rich. The other problem needed to counter is that the spark is generally weaker at idle RPM and the fuel more difficult to ignite due to its poor mixing. There are many systems on both new and old cars used to counter these effects, vacuum and centrifugal advance in the distributer and idle circuits in the carbie.

HOW ABOUT A 1MONTH TRIAL?

I just had an idea rusty....how about letting people join oldholden.com for a months free trial then at the end of the month they have a choice to pay the ten bucks or be removed as members? i know it may seem a bit harsh and i have no idea how you would monitor such a thing (or if it would even work) but it would soon seperate the good eggs from the bad so to speak.....just a thought....

2004 NSW ALL HOLDEN DAY

Hi folks. I just happened to notice that the link on this page for the All Holden Day is 2002.
Tho I've nothing to do with the organisation of this show I'll give it a plug, especially since I and my club will be there :)

The 19th All Holden Day will be held at the Hawkesbury Showground on 1st August 2004. This is at Clarendon, opposite the Richmond RAAF base. Show entry enquiries should be made to 0414 449 275.
The show is accompanied by a 2 day swap meet which opens at 6am on July 31st.
Last year was my first and it was a pretty big day out. Heaps of cars (about 470 I think), heaps of parts to sift thru, band, food, helicopter rides.

cmon people pay the ten bucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

cmon people... pay the ten bucks membership fee!!!!!!!!! if you dont have ten bucks pay 5 if you dont have 5....pay 2!!!if not buy a beanie to keep your bloody head warm!!!!old holden .com beanies are much more fashionable than a rip-curl or quicksilver one and are a fraction of the cost!!!! every little bit helps!!!! i would be quite dis-pleased to hear rusty and highway would have to hock their house to keep this website running!!!!! the amount of information on this website is priceless... oldholden.com has been a lifeline for me not only to vent my frustration and anger with certain clutch shops etc etc (my fiance doesnt have to hear me complain)but also different ways of repairing, modifying my car from fellow oldholden drivers that have experienced the same problems with their cars....so cough up the cash it is not too much too ask!!!!!!

Morgana

Hi all

I have an FJ sedan that I need to switch the electrics over to 12 volt in (it's currently 6 volt) because I want to put an ECI in it as i live near the beach. My problem is the car is fully original and the only guy i could find who would do it wanted to rip half the bloody car apart which I won't do. Does anyone know an easier way to do it? I have heard of some kind of regulator you can put in??

wheels

My fj has had 13" EH style wheels fitted. I want to get it back to standard, or at least more like GMH designed it

Are there any 14" of 15" wheels, Holden or otherwise, that will match the stud pattern, centre etc?

Is it practical to have fj steel wheels modified to fit the 13" running gear. Otherwise there are a lot of diff and brake parts to be found to undo the mischief that has been done to the old girl.

Swinging pedals for FX-FJ

Hi guys, just wandering if anyone has a set of swing pedals fitted to an FX or FJ they wana sell. Swing pedals are mounted under the dash as opposed to going through the floor as original. I bought a custom set from Rod Hadfield but i've got a better chance of fitting them in my niece's pedal car. I assume there should be plenty around from people restoring these cars to original, and as such removing modified items,my dad took a set from his panelvan some time ago but he tossed em out. No he won't sell his panelvan (i asked)

FJ in need of wider wheels

Hi, y'all!

This is Volker from Hamburg, Germany.
Found out about this website by chance. Great place for Holden heads!

My FJ still runs on these ugly skinny standard tires. During my last stay in Australia, I found out that there are people around who convert classic Holden standard wheels by welding in wider rims. Any addresses?

Further more, I'd like to know if there are after market wheels available which fit to the early Holden bolt pattern.

In fact, I would love to keep the Holden (apart from 12 Volt system and wider wheels) as original as possible.

Keep Holden together!
