Help!! Need advice for a newbie

Hi all I'm asking for a lot of help here, but I made the run from Gladstone to Cooly in the EJ it was a big trip. On the way down I had heating issues and we found out coolant was leaking from the bottom of the water pump. That got changed out in a carpark in Moaryfield. Then we hit stop start traffic just after the goldcoast and the old girl wouldn't idle properly. The when she would knonk out and would really to struggle to start. We got to cool and then then next morning it started but still was a bit rough at idle. Trip back was very similar every time I stopped I.

Nice day for it

Had the day off today and such a nice day took the old girl for a run down the coast to Kiama and back. Ran like a dream, new brakes bedding in nicely. This is what we put all the hours in for.

Old Cars

Doncha love old cars? Spent a morning replacing shoes and drums on the EJ and hopped in her to test drive and bed them in. Would not start, turned over and over. Caught a couple of times but no go. She normally fires up on the second or third crank. Thought it was flooded, left for a minute or so but no dice. Popped the bonnet, tickled the accelerator linkage and petrol spurted out the carby. Bugger me if the little plug on the side hadn't popped out! No sign of it on driveway, must have happened on the way home yesterday.

Front Drums

Should front drums get hot under normal use? After a 30 minute drive in traffic both front hubcaps are hot to touch - not too hot to put your hand on them but pretty warm. Rear hubcaps are stone cold. Is this normal, or are my shoes dragging a bit?

Halogen Upgrade

Planning to fit these to the EJ - have read differing opinions regarding the need for relays. These halogens are 55 watt low beam and 60 watt Hi Beam and I understand thesis the same as the 7" sealed beams currently on the car, so no relay required. Its only if you plan to fit driving lights or higher wattage halogens (e.g.: 100 watt) that you need a relay. Not that fitting a relay is a problem but figured if its not required why bother? Thoughts?

Ej Holden sedan Boot and locks, what other old holdens fit?

Hi I was wondering what other model locks fit an Ej Holden sedan? All I know is that the ej and eh are different with the boot locks but not sure what models will fit. Also I am having trouble getting a set that has the ignition, boot and doors all matching is that normal? All help appreciated.

Rust Proofing

Now that I've got the EJ pretty much done (just a few minor rust bubbles to fix) I want to rust proof the whole car. What do you guys recommend? Good old Fish Oil, or is there something better these days?

Rear Screen

Image:

Pulled the rear screen to attend to a few bubbles around the edge and pleased to find that underneath 51 years of dirt and crap there is only a few spots of light surface rust - panels are solid. Even has original green paint along most of the length. Now just need to clean it up, sand it back prime and paint ready for new rubbers.

Rear Screen Rubber

Image:

Going to pull the rear screen out next weekend to attend to a little rust around the screen and also to replace the dried up old rubber. Need suggestions as to which company makes the best rubbers? I've been told sometimes the Rare Spares ones aren't too good a fit. Anyone have any suggestions?
