HQ won't start

Ok so my car was running rough, and then it became more and more difficult to start, someone suggested I check the points, they were pitted so I replaced the contacts and the gap is sweet.

Now I realize the car only starts when I put some petrol in the carb and then it turns over no problem, car runs fine once going but needs gas in the carb to start. Forgive my ignorance I'm trying to learn as much about the old girl as I go.

Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated.

HQ 202 Throttle linkage return spring

Hi All,

Doing a bit of work on my sons HQ ute. It has a Red 202 with manual throttle linkage (not cable) with a standard Stromberg carbie. I noticed that between the pedal and the carbie there is only one spring return (at the carbie). Years ago on karts we used to have two, one at the pedal and at the carbie.

Is this normal that a single frail little spring returns the pedal and linkages - or are we missing one somewhere at the pedal ?

Brake Light problem

Have a problem with my HX Premier, The brake light on the dash is always lit up, have checked the master brake cylinder for leaks and none found, the brake fluid level is at full, i have also changed the brake light switch on the brake pedal. But still the brake light remains on. Need help with this problem

What will a stock 202 rev to?

Hi everyone,

Does anybody know what a stock red 202 in a VB commodore will rev to. My aftermarket tacho is saying i am reving it to 5grand but i didnt think a stock 202 would rev that high. I think I need to get my tacho calibrated.
Just wanted to check what a stock 202 should rev to but first.

If anyone can help it would be great.

staying put

Hi i am new to the site and couldnt find the bit where you can find answers to questions that have already been asked, so sorry if this is a repeat. the brakes on my HJ are playing up. everytime i hold the brake pedal down whether the car is running or not after about 2 minutes it goes to the floor and i lose my brakes untill i take my foot off the pedal and then repeat step one.

I checked the nipples and lines for leaks, to my limited experience it seems good

I bled the brakes

checked the suction hose (or whatever that hose is called)

still the same problem. if you have any ideas please let me know, as this is my daily driver and i dont like the thought of dodgy brakes.

Sump Gasket change in 202

HI Everyone,

I need to change the sump gasket on my 202 (WB van) with the engine in car. How difficult is the job? I am no mechanic, just a learner, but I want to give it a crack myself

I couldn't find any old posts about this probably semi common task, I know you have to jack up the motor, but if someone could really spell the process out for me, I'd appreciate it alot

Recieved my new floors for the pano yesterday (Thanks to Betta Auto)
So Im hoping for a clear weekend so I can have a crack at welding them in.

Are there any tips that might help me out while I attack them? I plan on butt welding them in, so no overlap to catch water or moisture in and rust them out again..
Been through a lot of streetneats pics which helps out too...

HR carbie swap

Hi Guys, have a question for anyone who has swapped the original carbie on a HR to a 350 holley with a cain manifold.
I have the powerglide box, what happens with the kickdown rod that goes from the original carbie, there is no place on the manifold / carbie for this to go now? Is there another setup for this?

straight gas

Gaday, I'm looking at putting my 202 on straight gas, if it's going to be beneficial. It currently is dual fuel, I was told when I brought the car that the head was already set up for LPG and ULP. Which I'm thinking is true judging how it's still running so well as I run gas all the time except the first and last km of each day. This is my everyday car. What I'm thinking of doing. Vk manifold and throttle body. Got a quote from ultimate gas conversions currum downs for 400 bux for a mixer to suit the vk gear, instillation and tune up. This would not be gas injection but just going straight through the vk manifold. Has anyone done this before? Is it going to be much different then the standard varijet and manifold? If anyone has a info or better ideas I would be keen on hearing them. Cheers

tailshaft troubleshoot

hi guys, need some help with a tailshaft prob. picked up a v8 manual tailshaft for my vh commy which i,m runnin powerglide instead. shaft is too long needs cut down,but i ihave a vn commy shaft which i,m thinkin of joinin the front half to the back half of the manual which will be the rite meaursment. the ass end is large salisbury mini spooled with 4.44 gearin. i will be replacin all bearins an uni's too. so will this setup work i will get it balanced too after its done cheers ty

Hey all, thanks form advice on the ute. I may have fixed it now. I checked for vacuum leaks all good, checked the carby(took off the top float cover) and inside its as dry as a dead dingos donger. So I think its the fuel being blocked somehow. I take of the fuel pump and the plunger bit fell out with it. Replaced it with my spare fuel pump and she LIVES. The motor feels like its back to its old self so i hope its fixed. Strange that a fuel pump failing would cause the symptoms I mentioned in an earlier post....whadyareckon?

Holden 202 conversion

Hi there peeps, I have a 1974 Holden Hq in Malaysia, it currently has a 202 with auto trans, I would like to put a V8 into the car and add the side vents to my car, here's the problem, it does not have power steering as the box was swapped out years before, can I modify using a non Holden part( impossible to find and throw in rover V8 engine into the car... Pls help as I have already found the complete engine but. No transmission

HZ KINGSY 202 TRIMATIC WHIZZING PROBLEM

gday all,

bit of an annoying problem with me trimatic.

this is what it does is this:

say i'm slowing down to turn into a street. then brake. once around corner i put foot down.

the auto then sort of pauses, then makes a high, whizzing noise as it kicks down to 2nd or 1st (not quite sure - probably should be 1st).

it's as though its not properly kicking down when i slow down BEFORE i get to the corner
with a closed throttle.

i'm sure the vacuum hose connecting manifold to vacuum modulator is clear and well sealed.

any ideas anyone?

btw, someone told me the carby solenoid (which i've removed ages ago) has a wire going to
the auto for something. could this be it? manual does show that solenoid goes to auto transmission but doesn't explain it.

hey Holden folk, can anyone shed some light on why the ute is cutting out please.....These are the symptoms

202 engine, Starts and runs, misses a bit, then cuts out all of a sudden.
hard to start then will start with full choke and pumpinmg throttle 5-6 times. Runs for a few seconds then drops out.

Sometimes runs with misses and engine revs change without moving throttle

.sometimes will idle fine and then cuts out under load or up hills.

Thought it may be points so changed them ove to the HEI setup I removed last week thinking that was the problem....no change to symptoms.

Identifying the different 202 blacks

Gaday. I'm looking at a 202 black soon that has nothing bolted on. Is there a way of telling wether it was originally carb or injected? Thanks

stripped thread in bolt for head bolts

hi just wondering what to do about the thread in the block were the head bolts to it, the thread has been stripped, wanting to know if its ok to use hilicoil or is there something better, that might hold more pressure???

wiring lights in gauges

Hi all,

Putting a few gauges in the VB today and got a bit stuck when it came to wiring the lights in the gauges. I wasnt sure which wire the headlights ran off so I tried to have a look up under the dash and i popper the headlight switch out as far as i could pull it and all i could see was grey wire after grey wire running off it. There was heeps of them.
Does anybody know what wire to wire them off? I take it its the park lights one but which wire is that?
Accodring to the gregories manual the wires for the right park lights and headlamps are a brown wire and the left are a red wire.
Am i meant to wire them off one of these?

If someone could please point me in the right direction here it would be great as i'm quite confused.
