HR Clutch

Hi all, about a year ago I replaced the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing on my HR. All has been well since. The clutch plate didn't look too bad but it was slipping badly so I suspect the old pressure plate was the culprit.

Possible Earth Issue

Hi guys
I'm having an issue with my HK I suspect is as earthing issue.

My lights and tail light lamps work.
My brake lights work.

However, when my headlights are on, and I put my foot on the break, my driver's side rear lamp turns off.

I've heard HK holdens are infamous for bad earthing, so I'm curious to hear people's thoughts.

possible export hr

hello i have a hr special sedan and it has a few odd things that i cant work out,its pretty much all original, but it has a ball joint front end with drum brakes, it has never had a heater fitted, not even the leavers in the cab, it has a factory white roof, but its the same colour as the rest of the car under the white, it has the premier chrome strip under the back window and the windscreen squirter motor sits on top of the wiper motor, it had some sort of decal on the tappet cover and ive never heard a red motor that sounds anything like it, it has a spacer plate between carb and manifol

First drive

Hi guys it looks like all my leaks are now fixed. I have read that a weep can still exist a few days after its fixed. So im getting ready for its first drive and i was looking for advice on possibly monitoring oil level and water temperature while driving. Just as a precaution so i can detect possible problems before they become serious. I have standard hg belmont gauges which are just warning lights for temp oil and generator. Would this be sufficient. Is it safe to say if the lights do not come on then its safe and all good or are these gauges to slow to pick up problems quickly enough.

Oil leak

Hi guys trying to source a slow oil leak (1 drop ever 6 seconds or so) that appears to be coming from rear main. I can see oil marks on front of inspection cover but not on the back of the engine block. I thought rear mains leak down the back of the engine block. Anyway leak is very dark almost black but oil in sump is clean as a whistle, no sign of contaminants. Any ideas? Im stumped by this leak especially why its so different in colour to the rest of the oil. This is a newly rebuilt motor not even a km on it yet. Any help would be great. Thanks

Saginaw or M21 into HK ute

Hi. I have done a good search of the site and found lots of relevant information but would like to confirm one more time before I make my decision. I have a HK ute with a 161 and Toyota 5 speed box. I need to replace the box. The Saginaw is fine; however, some alteration to the tunnel on the passenger side needs to be made to provide clearance for some of the linkages. Although a little rough, this clearance can be beaten in with a hammer?? The M21 is fine; however, a part of a cross member needs to be removed to make clearance for the shifter?? Thanks very much for your help. Nick.

Steering column alignment

I have rebuilt the steering box (using a eare spares rebuild kit) and have taken the column out to clean and inspect (it was making a slight grinding sound) so it got cleaned and lubed. I put it back in but the column no longer sits straight in the housing. It is off to one side and rubs against my gear selectors (three on the tree) and when the steering wheel is it certain positions i cant change gear because of the rubbing. I have tried adjusting the mounting plate but it doesnt seem to move much. Is there something im missing or not doing? Any help would be great.

Temp Gauge

just wondering how many people are running temp gauges in their old Holden - the models that never had one just the temp light ? On many models (prior to EH) the temp lamp did not have a test or the test eg on start (eg HR) no longer works - so how confident are people that the temp light will come on when required and/or be reliable? Will installing a gauge impact on historical registration - very few mods are allowed in SA - where do people usually put them in their cars if they want it to be useful yet discreet?

Temp Light

decided to take the HR for a run today through hills. It was about 35 degrees. Checked coolant before heading off. Car ran well - considering it's the original 50 year old engine having never been reconditioned or head removed. On way home after about 3 hours I took her up to about 65-70 - whereas she normally feels content about 55. After sometime the temp light came on - so slowly pulled to the side and was prepared to turn engine off an let cool down - but the light went off - so dropped back to 55 and never came on again all way home.

161 HG ENGINE

I am looking for the original engine from my HG Panel Van. It was removed form my Van in 1980 and was later that year fitted to a HR Panel Van with the rego number JTR 325. I have a copy of the original Victorian rego card for my Van showing the rego number of KST 093, Chassis Number HG 00013A and Engine Number 161H322145. I also have a pic of the rego card for the HR Van showing when my engine was fitted to it.
If you or anyone you know have a HR Van that previously had that rego number (the rego number is no longer in use)check your engine number? Please.......

Radio interference

Fitting a radio to HR and having problems with engine interference.
The set is AM. And FM
No problems at all with the FM
AM works fine without the motor running but no good when it is running.
The ignition coil has a condenser fitted to the + side which I think was fitted as standard.
Their is no condenser fitted to the Bosch alternator or voltage regulator?
The Hight tension leads are silicon and in very good condition .
As the car is 50 years old could the condensor fitted to the ignition coil need to be replaced?

HG VAN BODY NUMBER 1A CHASSIS HG00013A REGO KST 093

Recently did a search through AOMC in Victoria regarding the first rego number and the original engine number of my Van which was built in 5/70 during the Restricted Volume Production of the HG Range. It was first registered in 9/70 as KST 093 and had the engine number of 161H322145. That engine was subsequently removed and was later fitted to another Holden with rego number JST 325. It replaced 161R173195 which I believe is a HR engine. Has anyone ever owned a HR with that rego? Does anyone have the engine with the number 161H322145 in their car?

v8 radiator for 6 cylinder

Ok guys, a mate of mine gave me a chev v8 radiator to go into my 161 powered hg holden ute. i had the radiator repaired at a proper shop and they also changed the size of the outlets to suit the 6 cylinder. now thankfully, the chev v8 radiators and 6 cylinder radiators have similar outlet placement which was a perfect match for the bottom hose. However the top hose was not as good and due to about an inch in difference i have had to pull and and stretch the hose to make it fit.

Mine does occasionally and all the reverse and brake lights etc work fine - take gear box (its a manual) out of reverse and light goes off - alternator charges battery properly ....haven't had time to investigate it yet - but interested to know if others have encountered this and if so what was the problem...thanks

electrical problems

hi guys, I have been successful with the electrics in my hg holden ute thus far. I have been using a workshop manual which has been helpful for the most part but I have 2 problems I cant seem to figure out. the first being the horn and the second being the reverse lights.

HR Standard Sedan

This is a HR Standard I've been tidying up and preserving. It was originally a government car (PMG) office and painted in PMG Fleet colour Ashwood Grey. Interior and engine/drivetrain is all original, 161 Low Compression engine, no heater, no chrome trim or anything - very basic and austere. It had an am push button radio with one speaker fitted in the early 70s.

replacing ignition switch

hi guys I am in the process of replacing my ignition switch in the hg holden ute. I bought a brand new ignition for my model from rare spares and have discovered that it only has 5 pins and my old one has 6 pins. it came with instructions which stated that if it was replacing a 6 pin switch that I should splice the 2 ignition wires onto one ignition pin. the yellow wire should be cut away from the plug and attached to the pink wire at the plug so that ignition 1 and ignition 2 wires now go to the only ignition pin on the new switch.
