Silly Question - Turbo Starfire

Yes it's the middle of the night when I ask this. A lot of people ask about adding turbos to inline 6 and V8 engines...I just had a thought. Has anyone heard of someone or even been in a workshop where a customer/friend etc wanted to add a turbo to a Starfire engine.

Because I'm keen to know, apart from the cost...how did it go???

Would a Starfire have enough power in the exhaust to spin a turbo?

Old is good.

A top little underated engine. the unloved cousin of the 186...
I suppose you could in theory, you would have to look at a gemini set up & mod it to fit the starfire..

good little engine bore it and put 3.3 pistons in port the head build a manifold adapt a honda ignition resionable size turbo biggest su carb toyota 5 speed fit in a hb or hc viva holden torana diff 3.9 or 4.1 lsd then go hard have this setup in shed in bits having the 3.3 pistons lowers the compression so as to run heaps of boost we ran this engine for years. at one stage while checking engine one day found waste gate had seized shut as we didnt have a boost gauge who knows what boost we were running never dynoed it just street tuned it also had this setup in a herald, sunbird and Morris marina all went hard. (this engine sitting in shed) just building one with 186 pistons so we can run higher compression less boost and injection just cause no one else has all in the name of good cheap fun

the 173 minus 2 cylinders
there's not a lot of point as all of holdens cars that it was available in can take a 202, 253 and 308

Toyota used the starfire in a model of corona (is that what you have in mind for banging a turbo on)

โ€œYou'd better send a meat truck. Charlie's copped a saucepan in the throat.โ€

Bold idea! Done right, it could bring the output/performance up to the level of, possibly, a naturally aspirated 2 litre Astron donk, or maybe the twin-spark 2 litre Nissan engine (series 3 rwd Bluebird and mighty Gazelle).

Not a stupid question as the HDT Rally team used to run one in a Gemini in the early 80's and yes it was quick! Try looking on Google

The Starfire would have benefited as much as the 6's or V8's if it had been fitted with HEI.

I've often thought of building a 6 Cyl blue/black HEI Distributor fitted with a V8 Reluctor and Stator.

The Reluctor and Stator would symmetrically have four of the Points filed off, converting the Pickup into a 4 Cyl unit that would screw straight into the Distributor.

You then fit the converted Distributor to the Starfire Engine.

If it's that easy to do, why didn't GMH commission Bosch to simply do that and make an HEI Distributor Cap?

Holdenpaedia, they're the brakes Mate.

Don't get me wrong I don't want to do this. I just wondered if it has ever been done.

I looked at a search of turbo Starfires, this has already been discussed at the Just Commodores forum, this is my favourite comment there on the idea:

"Hook the turbo up to your starter motor instead - you'll get more power than the Starfire could ever put out."

Hahaha!

But good on HDT if they found a way to do it. Certainly would have been unique.
