Calais V8, VQ V8 into 78 HZ

Hey again,

After a few months I'm getting close to ready to drop a 5.0 EFI into my HZ. I've got the key prices from some wreckers but a few questions cropped up I need answering.

I know the vast majority of 5.0 EFIs out of older Commodores will drop right in, so is it the same story for essentially the same thing in a Calais? The Calais is an SV91 has done 203000, whilst my other options are two VQs.

Also, when it comes to the headers / extractors, how much modification will be required / if at all if I scored them out of the vehicle as well. I had intended on just getting some of the ones made for the purpose of ebay, but if I can save money for the same result then I can afford more mods.

I'm leaning towards the VQs but I don't know how far they've gone. I'm going for a drive around South East melbourne tomorrow to visit the various wreckers and hear a few of them whilst they're still in the cars.

Any advice welcome!

Regards, Richard.

unsure if you are aware but thr sump and pickup will need to be changed to one from a hq/wb

the commodore manifolds/extractors will not fit, you will need extractors to suit this conversion

Hi Richard, If you don't want the hassles of the injection systen, a number of companyies are selling intake manifolds to suit injected motors but to fit 4 barrel carbs, so just add your extractors, change your sump and pick up and its a bolt in affair. You will need a turbo trans. Cheers Drew

Engine is having problems at the moment so I'm just loosing the whole thing. Anything else I do to it would also involve other repairs I'm not willing to do for an old engine. Thanks anyway :D

Anyone know of an easy conversion for the sump and pickup Ben was talking about? Castlemaine Rod Shop look like they do one, but for 600+ I suddenly can't afford the other bits.

Regards, Richard

Hi Richard,
Just your standard sump and pick up of any HQ to HZ fits, get them on ebay cheap. What car you looking at doing and what motor you got in it at the moment? What did you mean about having motor trouble? Cheers Andrew

HZ Kingswood sedan, HQ Kingswood Wagon, HJ Ute, HZ Sedan, HX ute and WB Stato, what to work on or cruise in today?

Hey Andrew,

First the valve lifters went, then the cam shaft, and now it looks like the piston rings have perished. I figured considering this is my daily drive, having it as an auto as well as fuel injected will save me money in the long run, as well as stopping me from spending any more time or money on a simple 253. The car is a 78 HZ Kingswood, so from what you're telling me my sump and pickup will fit? That'd be perfect. Is it simply a matter of bolt on, or is there something I need to tinker at?

Regards, Richard.

Hi Richard,
Yes your Pickup and sump will fit the new engine. But your going to need another trans, the trimatic is no good to you. Its going to cost you a bit. If money is a bit tight, buy another 253, cheap as chips! Stick rings and bearings in it away you go? Where abouts are you? Cheers Drew

I'm in Pakenham, South Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne. I'm happy to spend the money on that sort of gear, I've already got engine, extractors, turbo 700 etc. sorted out, money's only tight once I factor that gear into my bank account. I'm trying to stick to a budget! Not that it's working. Good news that the sump and pick up will hook up, it's basically the only time the cost has gone down now. The more I find out, the more bits I need. But I guess that's the way of these things!

I can feel it all narrowing down in terms of what I need, now all I have to do is buy it all and get it all in there...

Hi Again Richard, You going the injection system over a carby. Better economy and easy starting, just messy with that electronic stuff is not my cup of tea, unless its all ready fitted. Ive got a VS ss 185Kw HSV ehanced Commodore, and that thing goe's like the clappers and isnt bad on fuel. Anyway I hear the early Turbo 700s have mechanical kickdown, unlike the computer controled later models. The plug on the VS trans has 13 pins on it. Good luck with the project. Drew

Better factor in a modified trans x-member,shifter mods, tail shaft, modified fuel line/pump/tank set up,moving battery and a speedo cable/transducer setup to run the lock up converter etc etc
