QUICK QUESTION

I'm rebuilding my red 308 and I was wondering what sort of horsepower I can expect to get out of it,its a low budget build unfortunetly.
Heres what I've got:

the pistons are flat tops at 40 thou
the cam is crow in between what was called stage 2 and 3
the heads are a little better than L34, I assume that means bigger valves and they have been ported
the crank was reground to 20 thou under
the old dissy was replace by an elactronic ignition, unfotunetly with a small budget I had to use a procomp system
torker manifold
carbie is a 650 double pumper
there the basics, the bearins and rings are ACL

I know thats a pretty vague discription but hopefully one of you guys can give me an educated guess or a rough idea as to the numbers I could expect to get.

I have a red 308 with 30 over standard pistons, what id call stage 3 cam, big valve red heads(unported)yella terra roller rockers, edelbrock torker manifold, 650 Holley vac sec, also a pro comp hei, pacemaker 4-2-1 headers and 2 and a half inch exhaust and i have 171KW at the rear wheels in a WB panelvan.
Spent about 6 grand doin it and am a little disappointed really as was hoping for a little more but i think my heads are holding me back a little.

thanks for the input, my setup is to be quite similar to yours except the exhaust which will be 2.25' twin out of extractor, the cost is pretty close too. This motor is a replacement for the baby 8 in my tonner. Maybe you should give the heads a bit of a look and sqeeze a couple for horses out of them

anywhere from 260-320hp IMO - theres a lot of variables; compression, cam timing, lifter preload, ignition timing/curve, carby jetting - stuff like that can make or break an engine build, power-wise.

Yer I know I gave a vague discription but I just wanted an idea. I would be happy to get 300hp, well thats basically where I was aiming as its only a cruiser. thanks for the input.

Your heads, manifold, and carb would be more suited to a high-revving (around 7000 rpm) cam. "Between stage 2 and 3" would probably mean no more than 6000 rpm, which means you'll have too much air/fuel down low, and you'll run out of revs before you reach full power, so you could probably expect about the same as Old Mate's WB Van. You could get a bigger cam, or, perhaps more sensibly, fit a dual-plane manifold and a smaller, vacuum-secondary carb for now, and put the money saved on the fuel bill (quite a bit!) towards a future re-build, including a bigger cam, and your single-plane/double-pumper. I'd do some checking on the cam specs first - you may find it's bigger than you think, and perfectly suited. If you find that it is around 6000rpm max. one suitable option would be a brand new, 600 cfm vac-sec. Holley - they're only $298 at "Outlaw Speed Shop".

Just checked the specs - "Torker" manifolds for Holden are only good from 2500-6500 rpm (not 7000 as I thought)), so that would be the perfect cam power range. A Wade "1147b" grind (2700-6500rpm), or similar, would be close. You'd need to use "anti-pump up" lifters, and preferably roller rockers, if you chose to go with the bigger cam. You'd also need at least 10:1 compression ratio, to make it work.
