Recolouring Vinyl TIP

Just a heads up for anyone wanting to change or improve the look of vinyl parts (dash, visors, seats etc). I recently changed some green sunvisors and tan arm rests to black.

I tried two products: A) can of VHT vinyl die and B) 3M vinyl paint. If I had of new better I wouldn't have wasted $15 on the 3M.

The VHT(A) obsorbes into the surface and looks natural, in fact its hard to pick as being sprayed.

The 3M(B) sits on top of the surface and goes on really thick changing the pattern of the vinyl, which to me looks tacky and cheap, you can tell its not original.

So for anyone wanting to do the same, grab the VHT available at auto pro, and if VHT marketing see this, send me a couple cans for my good wrap!

Cheers
Damo

i don't agree

i used BOTH these products 2 weeks ago on my tonners interior

i used 3M for my door trims and dash and VHT for my seat (bench seat)

i found the 3M sprayed on beautiful and settled nicely not effecting the original pattern at all

i found the VHT sprayed on poorly and got much LESS coverage, the end result was very good though

i can't tell the difference in the end result between the brands, only difference i noticed was in how it sprayed on

Hey,

I have always preferred the VHT , as Damo said it seems to get into the vinyl and really colour it and doesn't wear off ( subject to reasonable care that is ), the 3M (only tried it once , didn't go back again ) seems to put a coating on the surface that is much more delicate, chips and tears pretty easily. I guess preparation has a lot to do with result but I did thoroughly clean and degrease/wax before spraying 3M as I do with VHT also.

Cheers

Ken

Agree 100%. VHT is by far the very best vinyl spray I've ever used....Highly recommend it.

"4 cylinders you say? Well there's your problem"

Only vinyl spray I have used was on my first eh about 30 years ago ( god that's embarassing !).General wear and tear was ok but I found anything even a little bit sharp ( such as the brass rivets on denim jean pockets ) would peel it straight off !.My brother had an xw falcon ( sorry for the swear word ) interior vinyl coated at an upholstery shop and it was brilliant. No wear, no discolour or flaking , and it was only about 3 times the price of my vht cans .

Cheers,

chipping and peeling depends on 2 things - How many coats you apply and how long you let it cure for. I did my HZ Premier console with VHT vinyl spray (3 coats and let it cure for a little over a week) and even with the seatbelt stalk rubbing against it there is no chipping or peeling at all.
