HZ Ignition Barrel & Key ~ Help & Information

Hi there,

Just wondering if I could get some help/information regarding the ignition barrel & key on my 1977 HZ Statesman Caprice.

The ignition barrel is the chrome type with two tags either side of the key and it has never turned fully to the "lock" position. The key will come out but you can then turn the ignition barrel back to the "on" position and start the car without the key!

When looking at the two types that are available for HQ to WB, it looks like my 1977 HZ Statesman Caprice has an HQ to HX type ingnition barrel? (chrome with two tags either side of the key). The other type avaiable for HZ to WB has one tag next to the key and is painted black.

Do I have the wrong ignition barrel in my HZ? and is this why the barrel will not go to the "lock" position and not lock properly? or is it another issue all together? Would anyone know if I do replace it with an HZ to WB type if this will solve my problem?

ANY help would be much appreciated!

Cheers,

Sian

The black ones wont fit if you have the chrome one..

They seem to wear out so no key is required, a replacement is easy to find, if your in oz try kingswood country or check out Ebay.

You will need a steering wheel puller and plenty of patience when changing it over.

Does it look as though the whole upper column has been replaced?
If not, the ignition barrells are internally different from the early type to the late.
This may be your problem but I have not fitted an early type to a later housing before, so it's just guessing at this point, but could well be likely.

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply :) The car is very original and does not look like any of the column has been "played" with, if you know what I mean! Just read another reply regarding ADR and build date information that indicates my 1977 HZ Statesman should in fact have the chrome two tab ignition barrel and key.

Cheers,

Sian

HZ Ignition Barrel & Key ~ Help & Information

1977 HZ Statesman Caprice. as it is a 1977 buit car it complies to
ADR 25, barrel is the chrome type with two tags either side of the key so it has the wright ignition lock in it. As of 1/1/1978 it changed to ADR 25A so from 1/1/78 HZ to WB has one tag next to the key and is painted black (early ones are satin color).

Wanted information from any one that has any information that has worked in a place that built ambulance's of any type in particular holden hq to wb's and any ambulance builder's paper work or manuals thanks authorised collector of emergency electrical's

Hi mackV8,

Thank you VERY much for the excellent information! This makes sense because my Statesman does seem very original and unmolested!

In your experience, would you know if I do replace the ignition barrel with the correct one if that will solve my problem of the ignition turning to the "on" position and starting the car without the key in it?

Cheers,

Sian

I would say that your lock is full of gunk from the key wearing.
If the lock is rebuilt or you get a new lock of the right type it will fix you problem.(it must be for a HX and early HZ as the HQ HJ ones are a bit different)key must be out for ignition to lock steering wheel.

Thanks heaps for that mackv8.

I think I'll go with replacing the ignition barrel and key, but places like Rare Spares, Kingswood Country and other eBay sellers etc. only list/sell them as HQ HJ & HX or HZ & WB. If they only supply the early ones as HQ HJ & HX and not HX to early HZ I guess that I don't have much choice?? Do you know what my other options would be, seeing as everyone seems to think that HQ and HJ are the same as the HX? (and early HZ).

Cheers,

Sian

HQ to early HZ is the same, chrome two tabs. Holden part number 92000358. HZ on through Commodore is 92001840 black one tab. I sold these when I worked at Holden from the ealy 80's through to mid 90's. So as early as 1984 Holden only sold 2 version of the barrel and key to suit all models from HQ through VK which was the current model at the time.

Thanks myeh, the information is much appreciated!

Just had me wondering a little when mackV8 mentioned that I should make sure that it is an HX to early HZ ignition barrel & key as the HQ to HJ are a little differnt? Haven't heard back from him yet regarding that difference? I did think that the HQ through to early HZ were all the same.

Cheers :)
