Tailight sealant clean up?

I am about to fit the tailights back in the HT. An earlyer post said that it was ok to use windscreen sealant to fit these back in. I was wondering what do i use to clean off the excess after i have bolted them in? the paint is only a week old so i didn't want to go using anything that would damage the paint.

Cheers, Ron

Works perfectly on silicones and will not hurt the paint at all. This is what we use when we install windscreens using butyl style sealants.

Use some fuel man

Well, in the original manual of the car, it says to use a little bit of fuel on the body work to get oil and tar from the road of the paint.

Look how many old cars on the road with stuffed paint around the fuel filler!
Kero is definately the safest mentioned so far....

She was just a whiskey maker, but I loved her still.

No only use turps or preferably prepwash (prepsol) Using Kero or petrol can stain some paint finishes and will leave quite an oily residue. The glovebox manual says to use petrol - this was written over 40 years ago! Back then the original finish was baked acrylic and petrol was not the chemical concoction it is today.

Go to supercheap and buy a tin of prepsol would be the best recommendation.

Many years ago when I worked in a Holden dealer we had an old guy that detsiled all the cars on the lot. He insisted on washing every car every day and also insisted on putting a cup of kerosine in his wash water. He said that the kerosine helped clean the paint and also worked to help absorb any water left sitting on the car and help prevent rust forming.
Do you know what paint types aren't effected by the kero? I know it definitely doesn't effect acrylics as everything was painted with it back then.
I'm curious?
My windscreen installer used kero to clean up my EH and there seems to be no damage. I have also done some further cleanup with no problems. I may have been lucky..

I too was shown kero in the wash water, mainly to assist in heavy road grime and tar removal, but only a cap, not a cup.
The only thing was that you had to pollish the cars afterwards as it tended to remove any protective wax as well.

I used K and H brand Wax & Grease Remover for automotive and industrial use. This is the prepsol that streatneat is referring to. Its available at most of the automotive stores such as Autobarn or your local paint supplier. Have a heap of rags handy as the windscreen sealant seems to spread easy with the prepsol but cleans off easily with a rag and the prepsol.
I wouldnt use petrol or kerosene.

Yep Ive heard of this as well. Kero is pretty harmless providing the paint isnt too fresh or porous. It does leave an oily finish and I have seen it stain paint more than once. Prepwash or the K&H one as sold by supercheap is also very slightly oily believe it or not. I use these products then folow up with metho to remove any traces of the oily residue from the prepwash prior to painting. Going back through some old Holden booklets it says to use white spirit - which is essentially further refined kero.

Some windscreen guys will still use kero - one day it will bite them on the arse -they aren't painters! AS long as the metho based window /glass cleaner removes the kero its fine.

Some paints like enamels will soften with Kero or prepwash- so be careful. Also some acrylic colours will absorb the kero laden butyl mastic and no amount of scrubbing will remove it. I found this is more prevalent with the use of petrol or kero - so thats why I suggest to avoid it. Prepwash isnt as aggressive. Kero today can contain additives that will ruin some paint finishes...especially the dyes used.

Bottom line is use the right solvent for the job.
