offtopic...whats inside exhaust brake unit?

my work truck is a fc hino. the exhaust brake lever on the exhaust manifold now moves the full distance, (was seized) but it dosent retard the motor veary much. is there a flap inside, that could possaby be worn or burnt etc?

apperenly the exhaust brake hasent been working for atleast a year, and no-one bothered to check why. all it was, was the push cylinder was seized part way.

Exhausted Flap

Hey Stepto,
Yes they do have a flap inside - easiest way I can think to describe it is, like a carby choke butterfly, and it will probably have a smallish hole in it, so it doesn't restrict the exhaust fully.

If you have a closer look at the area where your push cylinder pushes the lever / rod to the exhaust brake, you will most likely find the exhaust brake section is a cast piece that fits between the exhaust pipe, so you should be able to pull that section out seperately.

I would first have a closer look at the push rod, and make sure you are getting the full amount of travel. It could be possible that your push cylinder is not travelling the full amount, or even that the rod may need adjusting.

It depends on the truck too, not all of them feel like you have put the brakes on, some of them are quite light, but should still notice it slowing the truck down.

Hope that was of some help :)

its getting the full travel. it was stuck about a quarter way on, and i dont know for how long, ive only taken this truck over this month. yes it dos look like the "flap" part seperates from the manifold, but it looks like the mounting bolts are gona snap b4 they undo :(

this company i drive for, they dont even care that blinker lights, numberplate lights are out, after asking for weeks to fix my rear lights, yesterday i just spent my own money and brought all new globes.

that sucks steptoe!in the early 90s i worked for a no maintainance syndrome mob in old rattlers, next time you get back to your work place say the cops stopped you and gave you a warning!!those flap exhaust brakes seize up if they are not used aswell, any bolts on those will be impossible to undo!!if you do get it apart, stainless bolts plus coppercote, the air reg part of that circuit might need a tamper with, what is the rest of the truck like?fc hino, err mid 90s,,,,the 94 acco ive been in for 8 years was just traded in,,,,replaced with a brand new isuzu fvz,,ive done the hard yards in shakers!!this thing has the lot ,power windows, climate, power mirrors, blue tooth touch screen nav thing, even the cab has power tilt!!its got some big boots to fill,,the international was indestructible,i never washed it except the glass inside and out ,mirrors and lights.ill miss the road ranger, but not the noise/vibration and harshness,,,im getting older.

WHAT? me worry?
