diff trouble
after i replaced my spare tyre with the repair drive tyre i though and had a look at the two diameters..i noticed the car was pushing one way on the freeway with the spare...
indeed the spare tyre is a good inch higher when the two stand up next to each other..now my diff make a hell of a whining noise !so have coming theusday and wenesday of to repair the diff, i tried pulling one of the axles out on saterday last week but they are thight as !
iam not sure hwat i need to do, its a hr panno and it runs a 3.55 banjo diff.
i want to go to a 3.08 ratio, my first;
are there any banjo diffs with that ratio and if so would they fit straight in to my hr housing...
if not..
are there any complete diff housing that i can straight swap in to the hr..i mean would for instance an hq diff be an easy swap ?
thirdly.. anybody here with a diff for sale ?
thanks mick

err?is the diff making a
err?is the diff making a noise with the odd tyre only?the diff thinks its doing a real slow wide turn!see if it does it with a pair of matched size tyres,a length of chain with a heavy weight,on one of the wheel studs will pull the axle out, youll find a 308 banjo centre, you might need a long bolt from the inside of the housing though, any help here?
WHAT? me worry?
no diff makes funny whining
no diff makes funny whining noise with the two same size tyres..
making me think i cooked the diff. i did drive a good 500 kilometer on the freeway with the two different tyres
when i wanted to replace the oil and draint the old oil i came to find out thee was NO oil in the housing, removed the drain plug, pokked a srewdriver in the oil, NO oil, a few drips, i filled it with two liters and that was enough to nearly reach the drain plug.
couldnt remove the axles after removing the 4 bolts behind them...i gues they are sized.so theusday will be slide hamer time !!
thanks so far.
Its always Hammer Time
You should always need to use a slide hammer to remove the axles from a Holden banjo diff as the bearings are an interference fit in the housing and on the axle. It sounds to me as if the lack of oil in the diff carrier is more the culprit than the odd sized wheels in stuffing your diff centre.

I've seen these where water
I've seen these where water has got in and caused some rust around the bearing. A lot of people do put the bearings around the wrong way as well ("O" ring towards the inside). This helps with keeping oil in the diff housing, but does nothing to stop water getting into the bearing.
I have an old axle modified that fits around the axle and has a old flywheel that's used as a slide hammer (a poor mans axle puller).
On my own HR I just use the brake drum fitted the wrong way onto the studs with the axles nuts on about 5 to 10 turns. Then I use the drum as a puller. I'd only recommend this method if your axles come out easy.

PS; I gave up on the original diff many years ago, I now use a modified VL LSD diff but I still use the original HR bearings, seals and drum.
I had stuck axles on the EH.
I had stuck axles on the EH. I sprayed the bearings with WD40 and left it for a few hours and it came out fairly easy.
I used a can with the tube on it and sprayed in behind the backing plate right on the surface between the bearing and axle housing. My problem was the bearings were the wrong way around and over time rust and crap had got between the bearing and axle housing. THe WD40 loosened it all up.

Removing Axle
All you need to do to remove the axles is to put the wheel on lose with the wheel nuts. Then gently rock the wheel and the axle will pop out. Not alot of force is required.
You can have any colour you like, as long as its Fowlers Ivory,

Holdenpaedia, they're the brakes Mate.
pulling rear axles
easiest way i found to do it is unbolt the 4 nuts then reverse the brake drum ya pulled off chuck on 3 wheel nuts only about 2-3 threads on and then give it a good pull, always come out fine that way
