V8 Trimatic dipstick tube clarrification

I have installed my recently rebuilt trimatic. As I went from a 6 to V8 (red motor) I had to purchase the transmission which came with no oil filler tube. This was purchased later. I have fitted the tube and I have now read that there is a differance in tubes between red and blue motor trimatics.

How will I be able to tell if I have the correct tube. I do not want to wait until I have oil in it and start her up to see that I have an oil leak from the tube. An explanation and or photos of the differances will be of great help to me.

Thanks

Dipstick Dramas

You have 2 concerns.

1. Does the Dipstick fit properly (no leaks)?

The wrong Dipstick will result in an unstoppable Leak where the Dipstick enters the Case.

The concern is matching the Filler Tubes to the Bellhousings, because the Boss lengths change.

The Leak is persistent and cannot be fixed with a new O-Ring nor any amount of goo being applied.

2. Does it read correctly?

The only way to be sure about any Dipstick accuracy is to match the Book figure to the Dipstick reading when you fill the Trimatic.

Don't forget that even the correct Trimatic Dipstick can lose its Spot Welding at the topmost washer and allow the Dipstick to delve too deep causing under-reading.

I can't see much difference in the Boss lengths in the V8 case. That may be because V8's have primarily used the same Bellhousing.

have I got this right

As I have a V8 trimatic there should be no issues with the filler tube being the wrong one. I know that there is a big differance between a 6 and 8 tube. This means that one should only be concerned about diffant tubes when talking about 6 cyclinder trimatics.

I am not sure what is meant by Boss. My guess is this is the thickness of the bellhousing portion where it bolts upto the engine?

I have compared my dipstick with one that a mate has and the only differance is that one measures in litres and the other in pints but the length is the same.

One further question is how much oil is required to fill my transmission (it was rebuilt with no oil).

Thankyou

"My guess is this is the thickness of the bellhousing portion where it bolts upto the engine?"

You're right. It's that place on the Bellhousing to which the Dipstick Bracket bolts.

Are the Bellhousings the same?

Boss Bellhousings Red Vs Blue/Black Engine Trimatics

I am comparing his red motor trimatic with mine. I do not know anyone that has a blue or black engine trimatic to measure the boss against.

Does anyone have a blue/black engine V8 trimatic and is willing to measure the boss and let me you.

Thanks
