Fuel surge?

Finally took the HG down the 1/4 mile at calder park last night - woulda been more fun if she hadn't decided to start acting up on the strip.
Got her there, did a wicked burnout - didn't think shed go that well.. staged up and took off... first rev out full no probs, second rev rev sputter rev cut-out rev sputter sputter, third rev rev cut-out sputter rev rev, over the line and cursing at my [Naughty Pottyword]house time - 19 secs or somesuch.
Took it down the strip 3 times and same thing with all - all starts sputtering at half track, I can think it's one of three things.

1: The fuel pump can't keep up with the fuel demands of the carby.
2: I'm getting fuel surge - fuel sloshing around in the tank is creating air pockets in the line to me pump, carby, and ultimately - engine.
3: Something else I haven't figured out yet.

As for the night - was fun, but I get the feeling mine was one of the only "daily drivers" there - lotta trailer queens getting around, even though they looked [Naughty Pottyword]in wicked and did some nice times.

Any ideas, anyone?

What are you running - motor, carb (vacuum or mech secondaries) - does sound like its starving - if you are running a mechanical fuel pump and its a bit worn it could be bouncing off the camber cause of the revs and the carby runs dry

Yeh sorry, 308 - stage 3 heads, stage 2 cam, Quadrajet, extractors, stock fuel pump which used to be on me 253... so yeh it may be a bit worn.

Put an electric fuel pump in would be a good place to start but I also just remebered that there is sometimes a filter in the fuel tank on the end of the sender unit - this may be blocked a bit (or has fallen off) - and the tanks on the old holdens don't have baffles so I wouldn't be trying any hard gear changes with less than half a tank in the old girl

Quadrajets have this little fuel filter in the inlet to the carb. This filter is supposedly quite restrictive and WILL cause starvation problems with really hard use.

The general reccomendation is to remove the internal filter, and add a proper external filter, however be careful with the inlet fitting on the Quaddie as these are prone to stripping...

Hope this helps,

Victa.

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness".

you wouldn't believe it but years ago i had a little 4 pot japanese car which had similar problems. It turned out to be a dead spider in the fuel tank. go figure. probably that's not ur problem but don't be scared 2 think outside the square.
