HQ chrome

G'day fellas,

Finally bought the HQ monaro, but there a few issues which i expected and which are pretty minor (I think). So the new project beings.

There's small crack just behine the left hand control arm. a mate of mine reckins this is pretty common. should i go to an engineer to get it welded or is there a better way to fix it.

I'm also after a few parts. Its got electric windows which are stuffed and need replacing. I'm going for original winders. Are all HQ regulators the same? If not does anyone have a set of HQ regulators they want to sell? Does anyone have and want to sell the chrome trim which covers the front window rubbers on a HQ. I only need the top strip.

5l-HG do you still have that HQ front end?

Having recently purchased a HQ Monaro myself I have been chasing a lot of the same info...

The most important question, is your beast a coupe???

If the answer is NO, then standard HQ parts will fit just fine. However HJ-WB winders will not fit into the HQ doors.

If the answer is YES, then things are not so simple. The window regulators, and the chrome trims for the coupe are unique to the coupe, and as such much more difficult to locate...

Any more details on the beast? GTS? V8? 'box?

Yes, lots of work, and money to be put in, but the end result should be worth it (if it's not the missus is gonna kill me).

The subframe cracks are not too much to be worried about, but do get someone who is halfway decent to weld them up, or it will just crack again... When I welded my Tonner (my other 2-door) chassis I also added some small braces to that area, similar to what Holden did to the WB chassis...

Aussie 308, with a few leaks here and there, otherwise standard as far as I know, except for the holley. Original trimatic, which is in dire need of reconditioning as is the diff which well and truly sounds like it is going to [Naughty Pottyword] itself soon.

Exterior is reaonsable no major rust, although it does have a HJ front end. The body is an HQ GTS (I think you may have helped me figure that out) and I intend to take it back, replacing guards, bonnet, nose and bumper when cash permits. GTS rims with caps. Fairly original interior, except for the seats which have been replaced with some modern buckets (look like an old saas copy) and a HJ dash. Again, I'm going to replace this with a HQ dash at some stage.

the body code for the LE is 8WP37, where his was 80837.
prolly wrong, but you get that

Mine is also a 308/trimatic, but it has been converted to manual in the past.

Replacing that HJ dash with a HQ is not an easy task, as the whole dash support (complete width of the firwall) must be cut out and a HQ one welded in, which is the reverse of what would have been done in the first place. Also, if it has a HJ front on it check to see if the cowl (small panel in front of the windscreen) has been replaced with a HJ one, The ridges on the bonnet and cowl are different for HQ and HJ...

Yeah its an 80837.

It does have an HJ cowl. If anyone out there's (near sydney) got a hq front end that they want to get rid of, let me know.

Bugger and I thought, replacing the dash would be simply of matter of chucking the hq facia in. Oh well.

the plenum chamber, the dash, far out dude
some times when people are ruff, they just bog up the plenum chamber to match it to the hj bonnet, check that first, you might be lucky

Ok, if you are in luck and the cowl has been bogged up as suggested above, then that is easy, if not, then you can get a complete new cowl from rarespares for about $210.

Unfortunately the HQ has a totally different dash to the later models, easiest way to tell is the glovebox... does it have a HQ style glovebox, or a HJ style glovebox? The HQ dash is steel right across the car, whereas the HJ dash is completely bolt-on-plastic-crap...

Hmmm, it's all starting to fall into place.

The numbers on the tags show its a GTS, but they are riveted on. HJ cowl and dash, the vin on the rego is for a HZ and the engine number is QT618621.

I'm buggered if I could see any welds. Certainly starting to feel like I should be nominating myself for the bunny of the week award. Thank christ the rego is current.

Its got a hj dash. Don't suppose there's any way that an HJ dash could be fitted to an hq without any structural alterations?

Yes if it's a V8, chassis cracks are quite common in these, they improved the design on WB V8s. I have just had mine welded on my HZ Premier. I found a truck engineer that specilised in welding truck chassis's so he was happy to do the job on my HZ. So maybe try this option? I have a couple of internal winder mechanisms I'd be happy to sell you, not sure if they're HQ or HJ-WB though, if there was a way to tell with the unit out of the car I could then tell you for sure. I have a number of winder handles too, please email peteramanda@iprimus.... to discuss further.

Rarespares have got window regulators kits $98.67 each, just go out get some old stuffed ones put this kit through them and your set. hope this helps.

Thanks griezy, but i might leave it for the moment. i think it might be staying a hq/j/x given the work that would have to be done and $ spent.
