Gearbox change

Hi Lads

Im new to this site and given that my problem lays with a series 1 VR im not sure that this is the place to be posting questions but here we go: Ive currently got a VR s1 V6 AUTO which is making some nasty nasty grinding sounds under load at 100 to 110 kph... I was looking at replacing the Auto with a 5 speed manual ... ( I like manuals) my local wrecker has the pedals, housing clutch, box, tailshaft etc etc but he was unsure about whether or not I required any electronics? So my question is do I require any engine managment system changes and does the box require any electronics?
If anyone has any info on this it would be appreciated.
Cheers

The mapping of the computer will be different between a auto and manual - it wont do much to the car itself - it will still start and stop and everything as per normal but you may see a few weird things going on - rough idle - increased fuel usage and the like - if the wrecker has all those parts though you should be able to get the computer and it will be a straight swap (behind the LH kickpanel)

The only wiring on the manual is the speedo - the rest will be extras off the auto

I would be looking at the engine even before you look at touching the gearbox. I have had the same problem in my girlfriends VR. The problem is that the engine is not running correctly and the computer keeps locking and unlocking the torque converter, the problem in hers started around the 85-90KM/h mark gets really bad around 100 - 110 km and goes away around 120Km and sounds like you are driving over the rumble strip on the side of the road.
My first suggestion would be to replace plugs and leads and perhaps some injector cleaner and you will find most of that will go. But if you have a worn car you may have leaky injectors, Malory's make a red fuel conditioner that is around $8 per bottle which lasts about 4 tanks of fuel wihch will stop most of that.

hmmm
I don't know if you will require changes to your exsisting electronics set up, once again I suggest NICESS is the man to ask
I do know that the VR incurred a change to the auto as it became computer controlled. at a guess i'd say that there would be some problems but again NICESS really sounds like he knows what he is on about with the electronics

Mate,
In a nutshell, you need to change the PCM (Control module on auto vehicles) to the ECM (Control module on manual vehicles). Some of the pin outs into the ECM are different. Also you will need to change the engine harness. Auto and Manual harness' are different with connectors and pin outs. You will also need a manual memcal.

You cannot use a manual memcal (the blue computer chip) in a PCM!!

My suggestion is to try and get it all together (as a kit) from a wrecker.

Cheers
