New Electronic Ignition Guide

New guide finished, this one is using a second hand blue motor electronic ignition bought from RedSix. A more detailed guide than the original I think so I'd recommend reading them both ;)

looks good reaper.

only thing is, why didnt you open up the plug gap? for HEI it should be 1.5mm (60thou if memory serves)

and it might be a good idea to solder those wires.

To tell you the truth no-one has ever told me to open the plug gap...might have to look into that, and yes, soldering would have been a good move, but say hello to mister lazy ;)

Well done with the guides.
Pretty sure the plugs are a different part number too.
Maybe different heat range?
I agree with the soldering of that wire.
Instead of using electrical tape to insulate my joins, I now use heatshrink. Looks much neater & comes in different colours too.
Maybe in your work guide stick in somewhere to check the ignition setting with a timing light?

Cheers - Martin

part number is different because the blue head has a different thread to the red. standard plugs are fine to use, just open up the gap to 1.5mm

Are you sure about that plug gap woody? I want to do it and add it to the guide but I haven't heard about doing this from anyone before where electronic ignition is concerned...

hmm that does help yeah, weird too because I spoke to a mechanic this morning who said 'maybe 40" max', I've got the old plugs from the blue motor too so I may measure their gap and check that out too.

yeah i too have heard that the stock blue motor gap is 1.5mm or 60 thou .... in some cases it may not even make a difference to the cars performance/economy, it all depends on how well your spark ignites the air/fuel currently, but if your points gap is small enough it will sure help .....

also reaper, i added a comment to the relay picture in your work guide, because it looks to me like you got the wiring numbers mixed up.

Sammy.

I most likely did Sammy, I was wrecked by the time I finished installing it all and writing the guide and I can already see that I've said earth and power to the same terminal...will have to take it off the car and double check the numbering.

Going to adjust the plug gap this afternoon when I get my feeler gauges returned

If I had of checked my own wiring diagram rom the other guide I would have seen that what I said was wrong here. It is fixed now though. Thanks for pointing that out Sammy.

The 3.3 blue & red 202 plugs are a taper seal so I put BP6EFS-13 plugs with 60 thou gap in my 202. Thats standard for 3.3 blue motors. These wont fit 186 heads.Plugs for 186 have gaskets .Maybe you would need to find a plug to fit the 186 with the same heat range as BP6EFS-13? A GMH mechanic told me I had to change the plugs and set them at 60 thou.......But then he also wasnt keen on using a relay.....................Cheers paul
