I think that extractors are the Australian name and headers is the American name...not sure if this is correct or not.

don't know what the performance or characteristic differences may or may not be, but headers had two cylinders directly into one pipe and the other by itself, seperating the pipes with two sets of three, like the X2 and 186S set ups.
my pano has after market headers on it that are 25 odd years old

and i'd say the after market headers might be rare as im sure that extractors have been the way to go for quite some time.

header is just a general name given to the bit between the head and the collector. weather it is a standard cast iron manifold or extractors.

I was always taught(by my old man who is a real old school mechanic)that they were exhaust manifolds if standard, however some cars came standard with a type of "extractor" such as slant six chryslers whereas the holdens we are all familiar with came with the cast iron "manifolds". The difference between headers and extractors, I believe, is like the difference between fritz, polony and devon, stuff all its all the same stuff just that some people use different terms to describe the same thing.

There is a difference. Headres basically come out of the head and into the exhaust pipe. Extractors are designed, as the name implies, to take advantage of the "pulse" between firing in the cylinders which pushes and then leaves a vacuum which draws the exhaust gases out. The higher the revs the shorter the pipes, so a dragster has the gas virtually straight out of the cylinder, while a performance car which runs at lower revs for longer times has the extractor or scavenger longer pipes. You can get "tuned" extractors designed to perform best at certain revs, say 2500 to 4000, so they would be running best at fairly high speed, while others like the VK injected commies are relatively long because they are designed for round town type revs.
