Ok first. Over the weekend im going to look at a HJ-HZ GTS dash i might buy of someone i know at a fairly reasonable price ($300). Still expensive, but cheaper than ive seen alot go for. The good thing about buying this one over one of ebay is i can inspect it first to be sure of what im buying, and i know the person im buying from is very generous and will throw in all the wiring and bits no worries.
The thing is the clock doesn't work, are these easy to fix? ive seen on holdenpeadia how to fix kingswood electric clocks by replacing blown capacitors or whatever, which shouldn't be much of a drama for me, but are the GTS clocks electric (as in fixable in the same way as kingswood clocks).
how much would a clock expert charge to fix one if i cant?
The second thing on my mind is what apprenticeship should i be chasing. ive been doing work experience this week (during my holidays lol) at a mechanics. its been quite good, and although changing oil, filling washer bottles and machining discs all day isn't the greatest thing, i could see myself doing it. the problem is i was talking to someone who would know, and a fully qualified mechanic gets $630 per week plus maybe a bit extra, working from 8:30 - 5pm mon-fri. the same bloke said he knew someone who completed there mechanic apprenticeship, quit there job, and went and got an apprenticeship as a linesman. they got the same pay as a linesman apprentice as they did a qualified mechanic, and certainly would have got more once they were qualified as a linesman. the same bloke again said the only money as a mechanic is when you own your own business.
This seems a bit stingy to me. it takes about the same skill to fix cars as it does to lay bricks, but brick layers get more. im guessing this is because when you build a house you have to use a qualified person, but people are allowed to fix their cars in their backyards legally.
i know there has to be money somewhere out there, but wheres it at? auto sparky? engine reconditioner? Im sure i could lay bricks if i had to, but a buggered back by 40 doesn't shout yippee to me. and ive always enjoyed cars more than houses, not to mention im far more experienced when it comes to cars than i am bricklaying or plumbing or anything else for that matter.
i think im now experiencing the downside of technology. computers/robots that build cars and computers that do a mechanics job of diagnosing problems. cars almost are dam computers these days. next thing will be cars that drive themselves to the garage when there low on fuel.
I bought a GTS speedo off
I bought a GTS speedo off ebay and looked a getting a clock to fill in the space of the WB dash...Asked at holspares and was told they are unreliable and not many worked even straight out the factory...So I decided not to get one..
WB Tonner SHED
P.S Which ever career you choose think of your future health.
If you like oil and grease a Diesel mechanic can still make good money working on mining industry .If your smart enough auto electrician is cleaner and charge up to $100 a hour..
