If your idle is set a bit

If your idle is set a bit high it will clunk into first and reverse.

vacuum from the lumpy cam

If you have a big cam, and/or big carbs, you may need to fit a vacuum tank to supply the trans and more importantly the brakes with a higher vac signal.
Has the car got a standard, maybe even old Trimatic?
Cheers.

it is a reco trimatic standard thanks j

Lumpy

Depends how big the cam is, you may need a higher stall torque converter.
