What diff?

How can i tell what ratio the diff is on the WB ute, it was originally bought by Qld. transport back in
'81 don't know if that would help any, but if it was to carry loads maybe it was ordered with a certain type of diff.

Remove the rear plate and it should be stamped on the crownwheel, or, jack the back off the ground and turn the wheels by hand one full turn while counting the turns of the tailshaft.
Mark the wheel and tailshaft with chalk/paint etc first
It may have had a diff/rear end swap.
I used to use rear ends out of sedans and wagons in utes and tonners.

If it is a 6 cylinder it should be 3.55:1.
Early Holdens had the ratio stamped on the flange behind the yoke. Don't know if they were still doing that by WB.

Old is good.

and the ratio is stamped on the flange as you describe..in my case 2.6:1...usually requires a little cleaning..the body identification plate also has the rear axle code stamped on it eg GU4 and you can easily look up the code to ratio...this was of course what the car came with from the factory and it could have been changed...a good way though is as described above to turn you wheel one rev...typ ratios were 3.36 and 3.55 but depending on engine/trans and if one tonner could also be 3.08 and 4.44...but you get the idea and it will be noticeable..a bit of care to discern between 3.36 and 3.55..remove the slack first..ie make sure tailshaft is turning as the wheel is turning..you can increase the accuracy by turning the wheel multiple times eg 5 turns and dividing accordingly to get the result

Just a quick question mate
On my HJ Prem is Gu 4 and mine was a 3.08 ?
I did read something on this sight that GU 4 was HQ-HZ
I do know know that Statesman had a 2.6 for economy

My question is did they use the same code in the latter model for a different ratio ๐Ÿค”

One would think a HQ-HZ one toner would have a 3.55

is the 2.6 on my WB...was just using GU4 as an example of a diff code on the body plate for the original poster to recognise..then he could look up what ratio it was originally..the 3.08 was a very popular and common ratio used for a long time esp on the V8s...towards the end of HZ and WB series and subsequent commodores they went to the taller 2.6..as std on the 308s as you say to reduce revs and improve economy a bit...the introduction of the blue engine and regaining some of the lost performance experienced in the earlier pollution control engines helped the 2.6 a bit...you could always option different ratios...for economy or towing...the economy diff for instance would have been a good choice if you lived in the country and mainly travelled country miles at higher speeds...

you get the best of both worlds...a ratio thats great for acceleration and an overdrive 0.69 so that takes you back to the same as a 2.6 when in 4th compared with running a turbo 350 or turbo 400...for economy - sounds like a good compromise - the 3 speeds were a limiting factor in the day..now think it's not unusual to have 7 speed autos in modern cars! ps what rpm are you doing at 100km/hr in 4th ?
