Many years ago, an old timer earth moving contractor told me the reason for pot holes is because when the compacted road base is tested, the road base is removed then the hole is filled with sand, and you don't have to be a rocket scientist to understand bitumen over sand will never work, b doubles or not.

the sand is placed in the holes part of the process of the compaction rating, sand is always removed prior to tester leaving the site, under compaction is the main cause of pot holes as water ingress can occur etc etc A lot of old school/time earth movers had many sly ways to get great compaction results.

I saw a funny thing last time I was home
Up in NTH Qld they were doing the road repairs and a bloke had a believe it or not, a “leaf blower” to blow the water out of the pot hole and another bloke filled in in with tar mix 🤣🤣🤣🤣
That’s in the North where it rains and the average rain fall is 9 meters in Tully, about 100key down the road from me
Feel free to google their rain fall

As I always say

I have to agree. Im a primary school teacher (25yrs exp.) In all my years i've noticed that the kids who were decidedly "average" or slightly below academically generally ended up the most well adjusted, decent people, happy in their chosen careers or businesses (learned in the school of hard knocks). The so called "smart" kids were often the ones who usually ended up as "wasters". Just my observation though and sure, a generalisation. BUT alot of these "smart kids were poorly disciplined, know-it-alls lacking the basic character qualities necessary for being employable. You know, Honest, hard working and teachable.
take home message - Your "degree" does not necessarily reflect your IQ or character. (So called 'smart' engineer issue above a case in point)

How some past the IQ test is beyond me let alone know how to spell there own name, But in saying that, I got a group of guys that work with me that are some of the best hard working guys and most of all put the safety of other people around them at the top of their list
Unlike some people I serve with in the ADF 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I did a 4 apprenticeship when I left school and after that I went to uni and completed an engineering degree...this was in the 80s and I was happy with the training I received for both. I think the best engineers are those that progress from trade or technician. Having the practical experience really helps. Having done a trade and degree in the same discipline - the degree was much harder academically. In the engineering world you can't achieve much without trade, technical and professional levels - all necessary at different stages of projects and in quite high tech areas - scientists with PhDs...I'm at the end of my working career now and recruit uni graduates..a general observation is that the competency is sliding..I think its a combination of engineering being easier to get into because it's not as popular (so in demand) as it was 30 to 40 years ago, more subject areas to cover (so to cram into a 4 year degree it can be more superficial) and the modern methods of assessment all seem to contribute to a decline...I've noticed similar with trades...as a society I think we will see more instances or re-work, negligence and stuff ups all round...there is a lot of people out there who don't fully know what they are doing..

I have to agree.
We have two apprentice mechanics at work who weren't the workshop manager's choice.
They were employed by Head Office purely on their academic record, ie, very good HSC results.
They couldn't get a job anywhere else, so they applied for here. They just anted a job, any job.
The kids the mechanic wanted he had known for years. They both were good workers, good with their hands, and listened and took it in when they did work experience.
But, their education wasn't as good as the dumb, lazy, often absent, highly intelligent idiots we have.

Old is good.

That's the bruce highway. A pathetic single lane pothole pilled accident waiting to happen. And i have to pay $502.95 a year to register my bike for that. Value for dollar, i should have to pay $10 a year.

I'd say it's got more to do with accountants cutting costs than it is to do with engineers.

I wouldnt say cutting costs. Here at sarina to mackay region. They put in an overtaking lane 500m long and put a sign up saying that it cost 33million. For rocks dropped on tar. I know that the m1 at the gold coast was a concrete road at 1million a kilometre with a 100 year minimum life. I asked the mackay mains road representative, who couldn't explain where the money went

Bryan

Exactly, three quarters of the money is probably spent on "consultants" while they cut costs on the materials and the people/equipment they use to build the roads
