Hg Holden heater/demister

Just took a hg kingswood over the pits and part of the list given back is having a demister that works and blows warm air. The demister used to be quite strong however never blew warm air and has since stopped working. It has a heater box in place however all of the hoses running to the engine are blanked off. Will simply connecting these provide warm air for the demister? How do I go about troubleshooting a demister that does not work?

I’ve done the same, 2 x cigarette plug hair dryers (for camping and the like) sitting on top of the dash

if it was a 70 model it wouldn't have to have a working demister..my understanding is that law came out in 1971..my dad's 70 HT didn't have a heater at all..anyway you need to check the heater core..so I'd start by flushing it out...better still remove from the car and vacuum test and give a good clean or replace with a recond one...hook the hoses back up with the necessary tap to open and shut the flow of hot water through the core and check that other linkages and vent flaps are operating correctly from the dash controls...

True it didnt need one, but probably falls under the rule of if its fitted it must work, which is a rule across the board..
but yes check for blocked heater core, or more likely a defective heater tap. very common for early holden heater taps to fail

HG did not have a tap or valve, just a flap which would let air pass through the core. These were usually disconnected when they started to leak. The water passed through the core all the time.

If it's blowing cold air, I'd say that's because the heater core's blanked off, there's every chance it was done because it leaks. If you reconnect it, (probably rusty) water might pis$ out. They're not hard to pull out, might be worth pulling out anyway to flush it. If the fan's stopped working, that's a different matter, could be blocked, buggered or a fuse blown.
Good luck..

for a heater core is to suck on one pipe with your mouth while blocking the other pipe off with your hand. Best to make sure it's empty first! The vacuum you can pull with your lungs simulates a pressure test of about 14psi - so a good cheap easy way to test it. If there is a leak you will be able to continually draw a breath.

That saves pulling it out.

A politician couldn't do that, they blow hot air all the time.
