Battery terminal Drilling

G'day All,
I'm getting a car ready for The [Naughty Pottyword]box Rally and the dead battery I pulled out had bolts through the terminals. What's the go with drilling through the terminals? Is it safe to do and not get blown up/electrocuted?
Cheers
Al

A bit like smoking over a battery do it enough times and one will blow up in ya face I wouldn't want the sparks from a drill to cause an explosion the chances of that happening would be very low. It would be a no no from the point of are we insured to do this.

Whats wrong with Melbourne drug addicts sleeping all over the footpath trying to scab money?

It might be better to change out the terminal ends on the leads to a more conventional circular loop type. Otherwise, Iโ€™d have no concerns about drilling through the lead posts on the battery

safer to change the connectors on the leads
we use to repair the battery posts we had a die to re mould them if they had corroded away or broke off
we'd drill a hole in the centre of the post and use a self tapper to give it something to help hold to and pour hot lead in to the die
as others have said it can be dangerous i warned a young guy about smoking while over a battery while changing it in a bus once he ignore me next thing it exploded

There's a myth that if you put a 'charged' battery on a concrete floor, it'll lose it's charge. Put a piece of board between it and the floor to prevent this happening, apparently this works. Anyone heard this?

I had heard that Tim, but I had forgotten about it until you reminded me. I still whack โ€˜em down on the concrete to charge them, seems to do the trick

The mechanics at work never put any of the new spare batteries on the floor. They always sit on a bit of 5 ply.

Old is good.

Yea but told it takes longer and wonโ€™t fully charge?
If you put them on the bare concrete?

Iโ€™d say yeah, it would have to be a pretty old battery to have a different plastic casing ...I mean real old and you wouldnโ€™t bother trying to recharge it

Cheers lads, appreciate the input. I thought it safer to just change the terminal ends, which we did and sheโ€™s no problems now.
Thanks again gents
