if you don't have the right key for the ignition you
can take one of the door locks out and if its original to the car it should have a number on the side of the barrel
this number should match the ignition if you take it
to a lock smith they can cut a key to that code for you

to start the car without the key you will need to provide power to the ignition coil (ignition/Run) and momentarily apply power to the solenoid (Start). On the EH, there is a purple wire that goes from the ignition switch to solenoid, so this is the wire you need to connect to 12V in order to start and then disconnect when engine is running. I'm assuming it's a manual (if an auto you also have to contend with the neutral safety switch - that's another purple wire that should be connected to the solenoid wire. The pink wire at the ignition switch goes to the ignition coil..it needs to be at 12V only when running and then the White/Orange/Purple wire needs to be connected to 12V whilst Starting - Applying full 12V to ignition coil continuously will damage the primary winding of coil if it's an original type...quite a few cars have been modified over the years to remove the normal resistance.

Andrew

If you have always been able to start it without the key and turn it to lock without a key I would say your switch is worn out. It is quite common for an EH.
You can buy new switches on ebay or Rare spares (I think they have them. It might be a good investment because if you can start it without the key, so can any thief or joy rider.
