VN heads are a bad idea on the 253, the small bore doesn't need that much flow, 253's wake up well with a raise in compression, and some cleaning up of the inlet ports, if staying with standard or even up to 60 thou over with bore, you do NOT want VN heads. I'm building a 253 stroker with a scat 355 crank, chevy 400 rods and chevy 305 pistons {110 thou over}, this comes out at 305 cubic inch, the heads are one size over on inlet valve and stock exhaust, mild port shaping and thats all it needs to get to 300+ HP with loads of torque. A stock prepollution 4 barrel inlet manifold or a elelbrock performer is all that's needed, maybe a 1 inch carb spacer. People forget that the 253 and 308 heads are the same, the 253 has a far smaller bore so it already flows quite well, decking the block to get higher compression, around 10/10.5 to 1 will really wake up the 253. Don't go too big with the cam, they just don't need a big cam, a mild cam in a 308 is quite large in a 253 so my advice is to talk to someone that's already built tough 253's, lots of misinformation online....

Ever thought of a stroker? You can still use the 253 block.

That article is great and goes a long way to explaining what a 253 needs to make power, I've had a very tough little 253 in a L#@ SLR and it flew, embarrassed a few bigger engines and even started an argument from a guy in a 308 statesman that I blew away, I had to pull the bonnet to shut him up....lol
