Red Motor - know nothing, need help

Anyone with any mechanical knowledge, your wisdom will be greatly appreciated:

I have recently inherited an HZ SL, it runs very nicely at the moment but that may be more due to good luck rather than good management. I have next to no experience with engines.

I was having a look at the motor, and found this black rubber tube that seems to run nowhere, which seems odd. All its mates are plugged into something on both ends, but not this little fella.

As per the pictures, it emerges from this small cylindrical object on the front left of the motor, then runs across to the right and just... ends.

Any ideas? Thanks,

Darren

that little rusty cylinder you refer to is the Vacuum solenoid that controls vacuum advance. It's part of a emission control system known as vacuum Advance Control - I won't go into the details - you can easily look it up. The solenoid has 3 hoses connected to it as follows..one on the T piece runs to the distributor...the device that has all your spark plug leads connected to it...the other hose at the T piece goes to ported vacuum on the carburetor...maybe easy to take off the air cleaner to see where it connects...the final hose goes to the Thermal vacuum switch (TVS)...its a plastic fitting on top of the thermostat housing...it has vacuum from manifold and passes vacuum to the distributor in an overheat situation...My advice is to bypass the lot...connect the distributor vacuum advance hose direct to the manifold port which is currently connected to the TVS...you also need to make sure that port on the carburetor has a short length of hose attached with a plug (screw or bolt) on it...the carburetor port you are looking for is the one below the hose that runs to the charcoal canister purge connection...it have purge marked on the top of the canister - located near your windscreen washer bottle...trace the hose back to carburetor and you will see below it a pipe...thats where the hose is supposed to connect to..below that pipe is another hose that is the EGR connection ..it goes to a valve below the carby on the exhaust manifold....this holdenpedia link has a picture...the pipe that says distributor is the one your hose should be connected to...http://holdenpaedia....

The hoses that plug into the Inlet Manifold are the thinnest, above throttle connections are thicker, EGR thicker again, Cannister and float bowl ventilation hoses are the thickest.
