I'd take the HJ pre pollution power and HZ suspension and handling...I prefer the HJXZ interior and dash layout to the Q...years ago I always preferred those models exterior to the HQ but now looking back I really like the single headlight HQ Coupe style - funny how our tastes and thinking change..they are all good in different ways - nowadays most of us don't have a lot of choice re what we like vs can afford...A mag I have states that 943 HJ Coupes were built, there was 580 HX...so quite low numbers and 13,782 HQs...most coupes were HK at 15,637...so that suggests Australians at the time initially liked and bought the coupes and they dwindled towards the mid 70s...4 doors becoming more popular...2 doors are a PIA if you have young kids...

so the HX numbers align closely to the 580 in my mag re the HX coupe which to my knowledge was only the LE..the 943 HJ number quoted is only for coupe and inc all trim levels so GTS and LS...I think your HJ 4 door number sounds about right...there was more of the 4 doors than 2 doors...They didn't sell big numbers...I don't know if it was because they had limited bodies or because they didn't sell they were not going to invest in re-design...I think it was latter as the HX LE was a special run out to use left over bodies and get rid of them...

The Holden design team were lazy in that they made no effort to tweak the tail light rear bumper arrangement to indicate a new model, even a token effort that wouldn't have cost too much for the tooling. They coulda even borrowed from big brothers (GM) parts bin. By then the HQ bumper was getting a bit long in the tooth (as handsome as it was) the buying public want new and different. I realise that they were just using up the remaining bodies but a simple change could have made the HJ HX unique in their own right

The HJ sedan had a section "punched" into the rear 1/4 of the HQ. You can easily fit HJ tail lights to a HQ sedan, but you cannot fit HJ tail lights to a coupe as the angle on the rear 1/4 is more sloped. The distance at the top of the bumper from boot opening to outer is the same sedan to coupe but the distance at the top of the 1/4 boot opening to outer is less on the coupe by about 2cm, so the tail light "hangs out" when people do the conversion, they fill this with bog and all is good.

I red somewhere, Holden did the HQ SS as am experiment to see how the public would react to a 4 door, they did 2 lots of them, then the 4 door GTS was realest.
Only because the 2 door wasn't selling in the numbers that they hoped for at the time.
IM told the HQ ss This car, the 4 door Belmont based 'SS', available in 1972, was made to see what the public reaction ... Available in 3 colours; Infra Red, Lettuce Alone and Ultra Violet Engines; 185hp 253 cu in V8.4speed.
I would think there be to meany of the "Lettuce Alone" ones around as these would of been repainted over the years and redone as GTS.
ME think, this is going to be another rare car to come by

I understand these were popular and sold very well...because they were affordable and had a fairly good spec that appealed to many..small economical V8 with 3.36 diff..so would have had enough punch for many...based on a Belmont but with some nice extras the only option you may have wanted was door arm rests...would have been a great sporty family car at the time...I'd like one now - maybe "poor man's Monaro?"
