'74 Statesman Deville my dad used to have, always enjoyed getting the keys to this, slide the sunroof back & cruise.

I reckon the HJ-Hz were a real nice shape/style inside and out..my brother in law in the late 70s had a HX and one of his mates had a HJ - both Caprices and all things being equal he said his mates just went so much quicker...I'm figuring the difference was just due to emission control on the HX. Auto catalogue states HJ as 9.8 sec 0-100 and 16.9 1/4 mile ave fuel economy of 15.3 mpg and the HX as 10.8 sec 0-100, 17.6 1/4 mile and same fuel economy...I had a HZ caprice in the early 80s...when I got it it was so quiet inside...you had to think twice whether the engine was running...they were well sound insulated...it was like you were in your own bubble...the latter year ones had very tall diff ratios..that kept revs and noise down further but hampered acceleration...it was never about performance ...sure the usual mods would make them get up and go...Brock got a lot more out of the WB with the Magnum...essentially changing the heads and improving engine breathing all round, inlet and exhaust more free flowing...and engine leaped from 126Kw to 188kw and about 80Nm increase in torque...which would have made a huge difference...
