Gearboxes

Hi I’m the proud new owner of an fj ute which has a column shift manual and I would like to know if it’s possible to convert it to a column shift automatic, so I can retain the original steering column etc . I am just assuming I have 1,2,3,R and N, so is there a way of using the same hardware and making those gears into a D,N,P,R. ??? Any ideas anyone? Thanks in advance

It isn't as simple as just bolting the gearbox in.
For starters, you will need something like this kit: https://www.ebay.com...
That's most of the fiddly bits.
Then you will:
1: have to modify the floor significantly to fit the trimatic underneath it.
2: make up a rear crossmember to suit the new gearbox. If you are lucky the bloke who sells the kits might have crossmembers.
3: probably get an FB/EH/EJ/EH automatic column.
4: get an automatic radiator. Probably an EK or EJ auto radiator might fit. Otherwise you could an aftermarket oil cooler, whick might be easier.
5: put a fitting on the carby/manifold to mount the kickdown cable and hook it uo to the accelerator linkage.
6: Find an engineer to pass it all so the car can be legally registered.
Fit a red six, because a stock, automatic grey motored Holden is a very slow car.
You could probably fit a Trimatic T-bar on the auto. It would be easier, but wouldn't fot with a bench seat.
Talk to the bloke whose link is above for advice. His number is on the bottom of his ebay listing.
And talk to an engineer before you lift a spanner, it can save a lot of problems later.

Why the need for an auto? They'll chug away in 3rd down to about walking pace, but when coupled to a hydramatic they perform like the handbrake's jammed on.

Thanks guys much appreciated I will call him ASAP. The reason for the auto was to keep the original interior of the car, I don’t want to modify anything dramatically if I can help it. Red motor is definitely in the plan as the grey motor is very slow as mentioned but thanks again fellas much appreciated

If you want to keep the interior original, what about putting a manual 3 speed all synchro gearbox in it? This would bolt straight uo your red six.
You would still have to modify the floor to clear the gearbox.
You could put an EJ/EH steering column in with an all synchro conversion from the bloke we mentioned. The only problem might be the linkages from the column to the gearbox.
If you went this way, I guarantee that 1,000 people could look at the car before one would pick it as not original.

If the car is in good condition I personally would leave it as original but its your car you can do to it what you want.
