Oldish Holden Rattly Noise

Hi Guys. Sorry not Old Holden but I'm trying to diagnose a tinny rattle in my sons VY Commodore. To me it sounds like a flex plate / torque converter bolt has come loose but it may be somewhat more sinister than that. I've checked the engine mounts and I don't think it's the cat's as I've put a stethoscope (wooden broom handle) to the bottom of the trans and it seems to be coming from there. Hope someone can help :-) I've uploaded a movie clip to listen to.

Here is a link if the upload doesn't work.

Flex plate, starter, muffler.
Something better than a broom handle is a piece of rod up against ear muffs (the hard plastic ones)

Thanks Hushtech. There doesn't seem to be any way of inspecting the flex plate (like there was in older Holdens, or am i thinking manuals???), I'm almost certain its not the Cats, so removing the starter is my next move. Or not. Starting to feel my age crawling under cars these days :-(

I'm not sure what bad or spun conrod bearings sound like, can anyone confirm it's not them? Or something equally serious? I'm not busting a hump if it's something in the bowels of the engine.

I think removing the starter would be a good next move - see if any rubbing or movement/cracks in the plate etc...if exhaust you can sometimes modify the sound by placing a large screwdriver along the pipe/muffler..I had a noisy resonator once and got rid of the noise by using a hose clamp - it doesn't sound like an exhaust rattle to me though...

tinny being the operative word leads me to believe it's not mechanical fault , sounds more like a rock rattling around in the bell housing or in exhaust heat shield or even a baffle broke free in the muffler , does it vary with engine and/or road speed ? my 5 cents anyway

I have snapped 2 x torque converter bolts in the past. Made me think I had done a bottom end at the time.

I had a similar rattle on a HZ Statesman Caprice many years ago...thought it was the bottom end as well...ended up being one of the flex plate bolts ..when I removed the plate and replaced all the bolts the one that had come loose never had a mark on the plate surface like all the others had so I reckon it was never done up in the factory...Holden quality control? Someone once told me they put in extra effort and time re Statesman's quality throughout production cycle but I don't know if that is true...

Thank-you all for your help. After a few days I had another listen, and I checked one catalytic converter against the other (using the "Hushtech Method", thanks Hushtech) and found the passenger side noisy and the drivers side not so I figured I'd pull it out and it was full of broken bits of honeycomb "stuff" (see pic). Cleaned that out and put it back on again and it's running nice and quiet again. I'll replace the catalytic converter with one that works soon ;-)
