Fuel Gauge

Why would my fuel gauge not work in my Holden wb with a white needle gts dash, it reads empty on the gauge but when there is a full tank it goes up to just under a quarter of a tank on the gauge, my float seems to be in good condition and the float arm moves freely there is power to the back of the gauge. There is also power at the fuel sender unit. Any help or info would be great! Cheers

Firstly there shouldn't be power+ at the sender, just negative. I'm assuming that's what you mean. First you need to diagnose if the problem is in the gauge or the sender. With the ignition on, touch the wire that goes to the sender to a good ground and watch and see if the gauge rises to higher than you've been getting, but don't let it go all the way to full or it can cook the gauge. If it rises nicely, then the problem could be the sender. Although it might work freely, the small brass wiper inside the resistor housing could be not contacting with the wire wound resistor all the way, although this is unlikely the problem, because if it wasn't contacting at full, your gauge would return to empty when full. Personally I think it's the gauge. Your fuel gauge in the quad cluster is a bi-metal type and the windings deteriorate and the bi-metal gets out of shape over years of use and would require rewinding and calibration. Very common. Pull out the fuel sender and check it with a multimeter set to ohms. Connect one lead to the connector terminal on the sender and the other to the metal top plate of the sender. You should get approx 73 ohms at empty and approx 10 ohms at full. If the sender reads ok, then it's definitely the gauge. Do your temp and oil gauges behave normally..?
