EH radiator conversion

Have posted about my EH having overheating probs, when stationary or under load. Have done everything that was suggested, head coming off next week, to be crack tested, although there has been no indication of water and oil mixing, and cleaning/flushing water jacket. Fitting a HQ V8 radiator has also been suggested, what needs to be done to fit same, I would imagine dimensions would be different, presently running STD 202 with trimatic

Take it to a radiator specialist for a pressure test and cooling system diagnosis before the head comes off. It should show up any leaks or problems and probably cost no more than a good head gasket set and might save a lot of time and work.
Is it pushing coolant past the radiator cap when it gets hot? If not it could simply be a faulty temperature gauge or light if you only have the standard red light.
You shouldn't need a HQ V8 radiator. We've got a 186 with an original EH 179 copper large core radiator in our EH. Nathan has done track days, hillclimbs, lap dashes and lots of slow running in traffic. it never, ever gets hot except for some heat soak after a session at a track day or hillclimb.
Sometimes the cheapest, easiest way out is to pay an expert.

Taken it to a specialist, flushed, no change. Timing checked, replaced pump, thermostat, checked temp gauge, running a 3 core radiator, replaced 2013. Running out of ideas!

How are the radiator hoses?
If the supporting spring in the bottom hose has corroded away to nothing the bottom hose could be collapsing with the suction of the pump and restricting coolant flow, causing the overheating.

check the water pump as well they corrode and the later cheap versions had that steel impeller that doesnt work as good as the cast type
have you had the radiator cleaned ??
they can look ok throught the hole where the cap goes but the tubes can be blocked further along
and the tubes can block further down
timing can cause over heating if wrong
could be broken rings theres a number of different reasons why it can over heat

Dad had an EH years ago with a 179 and original radiator.
No over heating problems.

Long time runner, doesn't blow smoke, or use oil, change filter and oil every 5000ks. Clocks up 5000ks every 6 weeks, don't thrash it, just a every day cruiser, takes 2 and from work, and anywhere else I want to go. Use it every day, not a show car, it's my every day drive, STD 202 with a trimatic.

The motor has done about 17000mls, doesn't use oil, or blow smoke, I clock up about 5000ks every 6 weeks. Change oil and filter every 5000ks, it's a daily driver, I haven't thrashed it, just a cruiser, has been ultra reliable for the almost 2yrs I've had it, the overheating while stationary has occurred since last summer.

from what you say, you have been flushing and cleaning the water jacket. My bet is the radiator core is blocked and needs a professional clean,or at worst scenario a new core. Tanks off type clean I mean with the core rodded through to clean junk out.
If the core is old and corroded, the new core or full radiator will be needed.
The water pump needs looked at to eliminate the impeller being corroded away.
Has it had a new thermostat recently by any chance? If so it maybe put in upside down? Or the thermostat may have failed and is stuck closed.
All simple items to check.
regards,Rod.

As above, done it all, radiator was replaced in 2013 with a 3 core, and has been flushed since, about 6mths ago. I'm thinking same, replace radiator, to do a complete rad refurbish cost the same as a new core.
