Trimatic gearbox slipping filter keeps getting blocked please help

Please help.
I had a leak from the main seal and bellhouse, mechanic replaced gaskets. I drove car for a coupe of weeks about 150 klm and the gear box started to slip. I took it back to the mechanics who said leave it with him but charges will apply?? Feeling ripped off I drove it home and changed the gearbox oil and filter. The filter was dirty with small dirt, and soily grease like debre. Also on the bottom of pan same dark oil and dirty greasy debre. Cleaned it up and put it together. Worked OK for about 4 weeks or 350 klms. Started to slip. Did the same clean and change again. Filter was dirty and dirty geasy muck on bottom of pan. Why is it getting dirty blocked filter?? Please help car is automatic trimatic 3 speed VK commodore EFI 6 cylinder stock standard. Regards Joe

There was a recall on trimatics for faulty clutch plates but I can't remember the years now.

My UC Torana was in the recall but this was years later.

Was there anything in the pan that looks like a ring.

It might be your plates disintegrating.

On mine it was only the reverse gear plates that went and there was a ring in the pan.

I made a filter out of a Holden oil filter and ran the trans oil through that.[you won't be able to do that]

I took it to trans shop and they said drive until you can't get reverse and then overhaul it. I never had to do anything. Yours sounds worse.

Also check around Ebay or Gumtree for a pan with a drain plug to make life a bit easier.

Check what someone else here says...

Thanks for your comments, all gears work fine once changed filter. No problems ever with reverse. When it starts to slip I notice oil level very high, like its not getting through. So I change the filter, thinking this is the problem?? The muck on the pan and filter is very fine dirt. No rings. Could it be a lot of dirty grease or dirt which got pushed in when the mechanic changed the main seal gasket and the bellhousing gasket?? Will I just have to keep changing the filter until it runs clean?? Not sure what to do? Or is this the signs of a dying trimatic? Thanks

The oil level is vital and must be checked engine hot.
Band adjustment must be correct to prevent slipping.

Thanks to all, Gear box works fine, just gets the filter blocked with gunck. Could the mechanic have missaligned the pump when reinstalling bellhousing ?? This causing bands to grind small particus which get blocked into filter which then restricts oil intake and then slips?? Not sure just waiting to see what happens in the next 350 kilometers. Could the bands be too tight causing filter blockage?? Thanks

Everything you've said could be caused by a loose band (there is only 1 in a Trimatic the others are clutch packs like motor cycles have).

Typically 5 turns anticlockwise from 40"/lb fully tightened.

Hi, just wondering if the colour of the oil can tell a fault or problem ? Is this normal colour for a month of normal driving about 350 kilometers? Thanks

The oil is red at least. That's the colour of Auto Trans Fluid.

Also make sure the modulator is getting full vacuum otherwise slipping will occur ...

Check the mechanic didn't crush or pinch any transmission cooler lines.

Also check the cooler inlet and out lines have not been swapped; if the rad outlet is at the bottom and is connected to the trans top then the fluid can drain back when the car is shut off.

Thanks for your comments, the transmition line in, is on the bottom of radiator, travels up inside radiator to top and then is connected to return to transmition line which is at the top. Is this correctly connected?? I looked at manuel and it Look's like input to radiator is bottom and out put is top. Is the correct thanks.

Also check that a gasket and not silastic was used (that might explain the grease like substance in the pan).

If the mechanic put hoses into radiator trans oil cooling incorrectly what could happen? What is the correct way? Thanks

stop stuffing around and go where you should have gone in the first place - an auto trans specialist. they have the superior knowledge and special tools required to see this right before you do further gearbox damage listening to internet warriors.

ps i work next door to an auto trans shop and one job he has me do whenever he does a trimatic, is surface grind the bellhousings because they warp and bleed pressure off once hot, allowing slip. fix it right before your clutch packs do wear out. i suspect this is why the thing was leaking in the first place.

Thanks for your advice, I had first taken it to a transmission specialist who charged me $800 he said e ad 30 years of experience. He said he would change all the seals and stop the oil leaks. After two weeks of driving fine, about 150 kilometers it started slipping. I checked the oil and it was very high on the dip stick. I guessed that the oil is not getting sucked up?? Went back to the specialist, he said that the car is very old and to leave it with him. But that he would be charging just to start $100 depending going up from there. I got worried and frightened feeling like he is not really interested in helping but rather ripping me off. so I drove home changed the clogged filter and it worked perfectly for 350 kilometers and the new filter got clogged again why ??? Could it have anything to do with the input into the radiator? My input is on the bottom is that correct? Thanks to all comments.

" I checked the oil and it was very high on the dip stick. I guessed that the oil is not getting sucked up??"

When the engine is stopped the oil climbs the dipstick because the torque converter drains half its oil back into the pan.

The proper way to check Trimatic oil is when the engine is hot, running and the car is on level ground.

Note dipstick is labelled FULL HOT.

Hi, thanks for your comment. When the transmission was working fine the oil level is perfect on the full when hot line is. When it started to slip I checked the oil thinking it might be low. But instead it way way too high. Over the full when hot line about an inch over. That's when I thought the filter might be blocked?? Yes, I checked oil while running engine and in neutral and on flat level ground. Thanks

Excess ATF will cause all manner of problems including erratic shifts and clutch pack slippage.

i would get the proper hoses it could be what the auto guy fitted is not the proper hoses suited to trans oil
and are rotting inside causing the blockage in the filter
i've seen this happen before
just because some one claims to be a qualified mechanic doesn't always mean they know what there doing there are many shady workshops out there
that are happy to take your money and bodgy your car up
i left one such dodgy employer years ago because i couldn't deal with him ripping off his customers

Thanks to your comments, hoses are the same as before. I had done an oil flush. Oil is coming out of hoses clean. I do remember the transission mechanic say he used specal glue when he changed the selector oil seal. I questioned him about that when I took it back. He ignored it. Wanted to charge more money to find and fix the problem. Nt happy with him costed me already $800. :(
So maybe there is glue behind the selector seal which is breaking apart. I will have to check when the pan is off next. Thanks

If the gearbox slips in Low, 1st and 2nd but in no other gear, the band is loose and needs retensioning.

Thanks for your comment. After changing filter it does not slip anymore. After About 350 kilometers of driving it started to slip. when you take off it slips when you accelerate increase revs to 3000, you have to accelerate slowly allowing the car to pick up speed to change to second gear and against slowly increase speed to change into 3 rd gear. If you rev slightly higher it will slip and you have to take your foot off the Peddle until it stops slipping then start again until I got home. Then I changed the filter, new oil and all is OK. What could be the problem could this happen again at about another 350 kilometers of driving? thanks?

A Blocked Filter will starve the Oil pump and result in low oil pressure.

Low oil pressure will result in slippage and erratic shifts..

"Thanks, what's causing the filter getting blocked only travelled 350 kilometers. Thanks"

Clutch pack and band material.

If the band is not properly adjusted it will burn up in L, 1st and 2nd.

If the oil pressure is low, every clutch pack will wear rapidly and block up the filter. Once the filter blocks, the problem will become worse.

I would waste no time in getting this done ...
