Converting a HR from manual to auto

I'm currently in the market for a HR and all I seem to across is manuals and after losing my right leg in an accident I am no longer able to drive manuals.

If I were to buy a manual, how hard is it and how much can I expect to pay for a conversion to a powerglide or other auto?

Many thanks.

pretty easy to convert. I would go trimatic unless your trying to stay period. you will need to change the diff to a 3.36 for a tri or 2.78 or 3.08 for the glide. flywheel, tailshaft and selectors will be the order of the day. as well as the appropriate cross member. the fiddly bit will be the steering column for a trimatic.. or go floor shift.

getting a shop to c/o could be expensive as it is a bit time consuming...but I rekon if you had all the bits, its a day and half or two days max.

a diff should be ~250 if its a good one not a pommy whiner...
the auto 3- 500 and ancillaries a further 200+ 12- 1500 to c/o... ESTIMATE only, get a Mr McHanic to advise is my advice from here...where are you?

Holdenpaedia, they're the brakes Mate.

HD HR auto parts rarely pop up, by far the easiest way to go would be fit a,trimatic & a T/bar or a B&M shifter.

There is/was a company selling column shift conersions to suit Trimatics in early Holdens. Anyone know who they are?
If you just want a cruiser the Powerglide should be fine and everything will bolt straight in.
If you buy a manual car it have a 3.36 diff in it. This should be fine. The auots ran a 3.55 as far as I know.
Watch ebay for auto conversion bits or maybe an auot car.

Auto diff gears for HD HR powerglides run 3.36 ratio as in the case of my HD, the 3.55 is a manual ratio, I've had a few trimatic Torana's & they were offered a 3.36 for an economy option, 3.08 for an all round option & 2.78 as an highway option. Tirana's used a similar sized tyre as HD HR & I find that a trimatic & a 3.08 is a perfect combination behind a red engine.
The column conversion is only an if already have a powerglide column.

I love the Powerglide - unless you do country miles.

Get it tricked up and mine does 0 to 50mph before
a quick upthrow on the column shift into second or
leave it in Drive and it does it automatically.

If you do go traumatic - then floor shift conversion
is likely cheaper than converting column shift as you
will already have blank manual column.

Donno

I converted a HD to a powerglide. This was a fair while ago.

I bought the powerglide from a wrecked taxi and a friend overhauled it for me.

Things you need...

Steering column with linkages.

Kick down linkages.

Neutral safety switch.

Spigot bearing.

Auto crossmember.[I think this is correct]

Tail shaft.

I didn't change the diff.

The radiator was for a manual and I didn't have the fittings for the oil cooling pipes so I bought an oil cooler and mounted it up front and ran the oil cooling pipes up there.

I did mine myself with some help. I had access to a hoist.

I was very happy with end result.

I wouldn't like to guess a price and be miles out but once you start the job everything falls into place.
