5 speed celica box?

I bought a HR premier sedan with a nice 186 engine and backed up with a celica 5 speed (cast iron)my problem is the gears are crunchy when the car is driven for about 3/4 kilometres. I have replaced both clutch master/slave cylinders, checked adjustments, still the same when it gets warmed up. Any ideas how to fix?

my guess is the synchro rings are shot, the layshaft bearings worn or the oil is wrong or tired. try a fresh batch of oil...if no change, book it in for a reco kit and resynchro job or sort out an exchange box?

normally with these, if the oil is incorrect (too thick) it will get better as it warms, not worse. try oil first as its easy and cheap - 75w90 gear oil in these.

check the pressure plate is releasing enough. a quick check i do is stop, clutch in, pause for several seconds and see if reverse grinds - if it does, the clutch is dragging and you need to find out why.

these boxes are bloody beautiful in good nick, however they are a bit of work to reco and the bearing kits are VERY expensive - i have done several - neither needed synchro's, they were in excellent condition, so its doubtful thats a common issue with them.

make sure its one of the good ratio ones before committing to a rebuild, some of them are too short in first to be useful behind a torquey 6.

Appreciated your input, sounds like you know a bit about these conversions. Another friend/mechanic suggested the problem could be in the pressure plate in that when it gets warm it looses it's function. When I get stuck with this problem I can actually turn the engine off, select first gear and with the clutch in the car wants to creep forward. It's then hard to get it out of gear? Does that give you any hints? I think I'll have to remove the box and replace clutch etc?
Regards Rusty.

hI THERE,

i THINK i FORGOT TO MENTION THE CAR CREEPS FORWARD WHEN i START THE ENGINE AGAIN, SO IT'S LIKE THE PRESSURE PLATE IS NOT FULLY RELEASING.

Rusty

youre just going to have to eyeball everything.

check the hydraulics are not creeping backwards.
make sure the air is bled out properly.
might be as simple as the clutch plate is dry/sticky on the input shaft.

It may be that the master cylinder being used is a drum brake one with the check valve still in it?

Sound like clutch too. But the crunch problem can be caused by the nylon shifter bush being worn. In this case I'd go clutch assy.
