Safety feature???????

We were loading our Kayaks back on the trailer this afternoon and I noticed a bloke in a fairly new X1 BMW frantically knocking on the windows and pointing at his family on the end of the wharf, about 20 metres away. It was 31 degrees up here this afternoon, so he was pretty hot in the car.
I walked over to his car to see what his problem was then started walking towards his family. His wife jumped up and ran back towards the car pressing the key fob.
Once the car was unlocked he got out and thanked us, then explained what his problem was. From what he said the X1 has an anti theft program that will disable it completely and lock the doors and windows if anyone gets into the car after the driver has walked away from it with the key fob without locking the car.
They hadn't locked it, he had walked back from the wharf and got in the car to get something and it locked him in. No horn, no lights to flash, he couldn't open the doors or windows. He didn't sound like he would be an X1 owner for much longer.
I know our EH will never do that to me.

Another vote for pre-electronic cars.
With all these gadgets, they just complicate things, and make the car more costly and unreliable.

"If your car has quarter vents, a diff at the back, and was available with wind-down windows, you may talk to me.
Otherwise I am not interested. Amen."

agree you need to be very familiar with these kind of features - maybe worth having one of those car window emergency breaking tools in the glove box.....

Andrew

I've never really seen the point to these keyless entry type things that have become nearly standard on cars in recent years, personally I reckon the standard key with the lock/unlock/boot realease buttons was advanced enough. Seen on the news a family had their Jeep full of Xmas presents stolen out of their own driveway the other day, thief just jumped in, pressed the start button and drove off. Was unlocked but keys were inside the house.
