LC-LJ Steering Problem

Topic:
Engine:
Image:

Anyone that drives an LC or LJ torana - check
old nolethane steering shaft joiner at the
back of the engine bay.

One of my mates had me help him change out a
radiator and I noticed the old red nolethane
had cracked, and as I pointed at it saying
WTF I then pushed it with my finger and it
fell apart into ..... 3 parts.

We don't know where the other part of it went
so everyone please check it out.

Holdenpaedia, they're the brakes Mate.

That's probably why manufacturers still use rubber for these things.
Nolethane is aftermarket.
I will say it makes great reuseable gaskets for things that get wet and frequently dismantled.

Old is good.

I can think of a few spare parts blokes I'd like to smack in the mouth for talking me into buying that red [Naughty Pottyword] because thats all they had, thats how most of that red [Naughty Pottyword] turned out for me also it lasted about a 1/4 the life of the original part.

Whats wrong with Melbourne drug addicts sleeping all over the footpath trying to scab money?

I was shocked as my LJ mate was going to get me to
follow him down to the brake guy's workshop but he
went down the fuel servo first to fill it up.

He walked around the front of the car and the Car
spoke to him.

The Car did a "Transformers Bumblebee" move and
sprung a tiny water leak in the front of the radiator
and a little bit of spray got him on his foot.

Well he drove it home and bought a new radiator to
install. We fitted it and were about 15 minutes away
from finishing the radiator install and he had to
take his daughter to dentist for about 30 minutes.

So I am standing there with a torch saying ....

"Anything else you want me to fix on your car as the
radiator wont take me that long to finish", and then
we both almost fell over when the red dangerous stuff
fell off in my hands and onto the floor.

Scary as this - is the bit that steers FRONT wheels so
imagine not having ANY STEERING AT ALL AT 100KM/HR

Don't know if the car saved his life or its own skin.

Oh and it cost $152 for the new rubber bit,
which is 4 times as heavy as the red bits
and takes a few minutes to fit with only 4
bolts. LC-LJ Torana drivers need to be told@!

I raced a couple of LJ's in speedway. I replaced that flex joint with the uni joint from an LH steering shaft. I don't know if this will bolt straight in, as both my cars had modified columns. But it did fit the shafts straight up. As for "red stuff" I've never had a drama.....BUT there was a post here a while back from one of our long time members, he had bushes etc fall to bits in storage, while they were new when he fitted them, they deteriorated from no use. I think "mr red stuff" looked after him with warranty.

i hate the stuff.

you would think they would re-inforce with something like the originals are... BY LAW you would think this stuff would need to adhere to some safety standards...
