fule gauge repair for HQ PREMIER

gday i've got a 1972 HQ premier and the fule gauge is stuck in full does any one know how i can fix this or do ineed to take it into the mechanics. cheers'

Check all the electrical connections around & leading to the fuel tank sender, usually when they are stuck on full there is a bad earth somewhere. Hope this helps you out.

when i put in $10 from empty the guage shows 1/2 full!!! and it goes down very slowly to 1/4 the suddenly hits empty!

could it be a guage problem or does it seem to be the sender and how would i fix it

I have owned a few HQs with a simular problem. it is most commonly caused by a gummed up sender in the tank, the gum is in the fuel and after time sediement builds up on the copper wire roll stopping the contacts from registering properly, also it can cause the fuel guage arm to become stuck in one position. you have to remove the sender from the tank, remove the contact's cover and use a carburettor cleaning solution to clean it. replace as removal and all should be well, this is a very common problem especially in the toyota corona fitted with the holden star-fire 4. '

Access to the sender is only possible from under the car (sedan), it can be found at the rear of the tank inline with the centre of the diff, removal can be done by using a screw driver. and gently tapping the raised tabs of the locking ring until in springs free.then remove the sender from the tank, being careful not to damage or loose the "o" ring seal, (clean alround the area before removing the sender, to avoid crap entering the tank). installation is the same as removal but make sure the locking ring is put in evenly or it will spring out later. good luck '
