202 black on 202 red
i have to fit a 202 black head to my 202 red motor. i know i have to drill holes in the block for the water galleries which is no problem, just wondering if this will weaking the block, and by how much? also should i get copper plugs for the old water holes in the block?

Blue/Black Head on a Red Six
THANKS
There was a guy who posted up here that he got a coolant leak because he used a universal head gasket.
The impression he left was that you should use a blue/black gasket which will open the correct holes and block the incorrect holes.
His problem stemmed from the fact that the universal gakset
allowed all holes to carry coolant.

red head
find a red head for like 60 bux or less , unless ur black has had some work done all ready
red v's blue/black
THANKS
A blue/black head has bigger valves and flows better also has beefier valve springs.
I'm currently tidying up a black EFI head and it's going on my red 202.
As for those holes, I plan to thread them and fit brass bungs.

I should have thought of that years ago
I should have thought of that years ago when I was reco-ing my 186. I worked as a reconditioner at the time so I had access to any number of spare blue heads (the good old days).
Instead, I fitted bigger valves to the red head, cleaned up the throats and ports...... basicly I had built myself a 9 port blue head. Should have saved myself the effort.
It would cost more to modify a red head to a decent standard than to just do the blue/black conversion.
use blue/black head gasket,
use blue/black head gasket, the holes old holes in the block can be either filled with brass plug or left won't matter I don't think the other guys one problems were caused by the holes in the head gasket.

Universal head Gasket
THANKS
"use blue/black head gasket, the holes old holes in the block can be either filled with brass plug or left won't matter "
That's exactly my concern. Because the universal gasket opened up both red and blue/black holes it allowed coolant to flow where it was never intended.

T that would be right I was
T that would be right I was thinking of the proper head gasket which is not universal.I haven't seen a universal gasket I would have thought it would not be practical to get a red gasket to fit blue/black motor the shape is a bit different (but I haven't seen the universal one)

Original Thread
THANKS
I wish I could find that original thread.
I have a vague idea that there was an image posted of the gasket.

blue/black conversion
THANKS
I've bought a blue/black head gasket to fit my black head on, never heard of universal ones at all.
I guess plugging the unused red block holes would be the ultimate fix, i'm debating with myself to just ignore them and leave the sealing up to the gasket ??
Problem for me is if i take a shortcut, it usually rears it's ugly head in the future and bites me on the arse.
Here's a tip that may be relevent to the original poster, I bought a holley 2 barrel manifold to suit red, blue and black motors and although the thing did fit up to the 12 port head (diffrent stud pattern for inl/ext mounting studs and holes), the ports were so poorly lined up and not enough meat to be able to port match them and quite frankly your better off with the original ugly old varijet manifold.
Fits 9 port no worries but going backwards putting it on a 12 port.
I'm yet to try but i've got my doubts that red extractors will fit the blue/black head even though i'm told they do. I've got a blue/black set here as well as the red set currently on the car.
HTH.
