Kickdown linkage for Powerglide HELP!?

Hey guys,
I would like to convert my 186 Red motor to VK EFI by swapping the 9 port head for a 12 port black head and all the other VK bits. The swap looks pretty straight forward except that my HR runs a 2 speed powerglide. Kickdown is via pushrods and brackets bolted to the original intake manifold.

Has anyone done this change and still retained the kickdown?

Anyone made or adapted linkages to suit?

What did they use?

I would love to hear from anyone that has done this, Pics would also be a great help!

Cheers, Damon.

Hey mate,

Id look at adapting some form of cable (almost like accelerator cable) to use as a kickdown, then all that would be needed is some sort of bracket to hold it to the intake. just an idea as ive had no dealings with poweglides.

While the powerglide could handle the EFI power no problem, I think you'd have less headaches putting the EFI Trimatic behind the motor as the ECU is programmed for this. The EFI Trimatic is stronger than the standard VK carby trimatic so make sure you get the right one.

That's my thoughts anyway.

The EFI is not programed for any specific gearbox. They love the two speed Powerglides.
IIRC the EFI Trimatics have strenghening ribs on the belhousing. But other than this. They are nothing special.

Don't they have the V8 trimatic internals, well so I was told?? Also the Powerglides are a very old tranny, surely parts will start to get harder to find to keep them running?

Cheers

If he changes to a Trimatic ....

Speedo drive dramas.

Gear selector dramas.

Gearbox mount dramas.

Prop shaft dramas.

IIRC, widening the tunnel problems.

He still has to work the kickdown whether he uses a mechanical or an electric kickdown Trimatic.

Thanks for all the info guys, but I dont want to change the driveline! I love the 2 speed powerglide. Its part of the HR prem's character.

My question is regarding linkages. I was hoping that someone might have had experience with this.(?)

I could manufacture something that would work, given enough time, but I drive the car every day and want to do the swap in limited time.

Dont want to experiment when there must be a tried and tested method.

Anybody...?

Came across your question. Sort of dealing with the same thing since I changed the carb on my 55 Belair. So far, I have removed the rod and purchased Lokars Powerglide cable. I just installed the engine and trans today, not sure if bolted it to the right spot on the trans. I used the governor line pressure screw to hold the bracket, it got a little bent being close to the bulk wall. It still moves ok. I need to install the intake and set it up. Hope this helps.

Hiya Terance,
Thanks for your post.
Just wondering what you meant by Lokars Powerglide cable?

Is this an aftermarket cable and bracket? If so, where do you get these?

If I could get an of the shelf cable and bracket, the whole job would be much quicker and easier.

How's your 55' going?
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Cheers, Damon.

I'd be calling Raceglides , They have been doing all sorts of Powerglide to "XYZ" motor conversions for years.

I'm sure there would be some type of modified cable setup ( Maybe similar to a Turbo 350 cable ? ) that would suit your needs.

A phone call cant hurt :)

Also Rodney or Stuart at Wholesale Automatics could well be worth a call ?

They are into all sorts of custom auto swaps & could have a option to suit ?

I've delt with them before & they are straight up honest people , If they cant help you they will tell you who can if they know .
