Brisbane cruise

Well I think it's about time we organise a Brisbane meet and great/cruise

Since it's our 1st one, I thought maybe we should see what date suits most people.

I was thinking around 12th 13th or 19th 20th of July.

Once we work out a date then we can work on a destination.

(Rusty can you please sticky this to the top of the page, thanks)

Cheers

Sounds like an EXCELLENT idea to me Sam!

I'll be in the Brisbane area mid to late July (so long as you don't mind a 4WD tagging along...).

Cruise sounds good

19th & 20th is be a bit touch and go for me, especially the night of the 19th, (cook's birthday), but seeing as there may be a national guest involved, we might have to try and work around it somehow.

Damn, the cook just walked in and read this, and said not to call her the cook and reminded me of the 19th, lol.

The weekend before, or the weekend after, would probably be easier for me, but whatever happens, I'll try to make it work.

Looking good...

Looks like we have some interest in this now...
I'm thinking the 19th (sorry Mrs Wheelnut) or the 20th (Sunday) That way we could get to meet Mr Qute from WA (special guest) lol..
I suppose we could try to decide where to meet next and try to work out a destination to cruise to and weather or not to have a BBQ at the other end?

As far as a meeting point to start from, I'm easy as I don't mind where I have to drive the Chevy to, The further the better, I'll be leaving from Jimboomba anyway...
Anyone have any suggestions?

Destination unknown...

Mate, The WB & I will pencil us in lightly for it because the dates mentioned sound ok for me and wherever is ok as well.

May I suggest one of BCC tourist drives. I think they`re called `Dungong tourist drives` in the greater Moreton Bay area but could`nt get much info from google about them. They are also very well signed (in case anyone gets lost) for the most part and usually has a BCC bbq at either end.

Also... Does any know the name of that road up here that seems to repeatedly pop up in the news notoriously for motorcycle hooning? Not that we`re gonna` be hooning but I`ve heard it`s a very nice drive somewhere in the Mt Cootha- Toowong area (I think?).
Just a few suggestions for you there mate...

Anywhere in the greater Brisbane area is ok with me if I`m around.

Paul (4034)

Could be a plan...

Some good ideas there Paul.
I think the road you thinking of might be Samford/Brisbane Vally road, It goes through Samford over the the mountain and down through to Fernvale.
I was on that road a few weeks ago in the Ute and thought it would make for a good drive in the Chevy.

Brisbane Cruise

Hi Sam
The trip up to Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious is simply amazing. Could I suggest that instead of heading up to Samford, which is nice, you pick up Road No 31 out through The Gap and follow that up to Mt Nebo and Mt Glorious. There are a couple of Cafes on the way up and many places to take in the view. Don't be put off by the bikies, most are like me(closer to 60), enjoying a scone and a cuppa. The road down from Mt Glorious should be fun in anything with drum brakes. This puts you onto the Wivenhoe-Somerset Dam Road and onto the Brisbane Valley Hwy. A stop in Fernvale is essential at the Pie Shop or an ale at the pub. You then keep going to pick up the Warrego Hwy to the Mt Crosby Rd turn off.
With so much to see, it would not be until mid afternoon you reached Collages Crossing. But you choose. There are many places for a BBQ around the Dams and along the way with no real hassels of being crowded. I'm only up the road from Colleges at Anstead and take visitors on that route once or so a year. It's great.
Just my 2c worth.
Cheers

Brisbane Cruise #3

Hi John,
That sound good, I have driven up that way for a job about a year ago and never went down the other side, I might have a look at that trip on Sunday instead. I was trying to keep out of city traffic and traffic lights so this could be a great alternative!

Thanks for the input John.
I'll try to report back Sunday night.

Brisbane Cruise

We did the trial cruise today, we started at Greenbank RSL then went on to the Mobil Servo at Oxley and then up to Mt Coo-tha.
The reason for the different stops heading to Mt Coo-tha is so anyone that wants to hook up along the way could do so depending on what was closer for them.
From there we took some back streets to get onto Waterworks rd and made our way up to Mt Nebo (Thanks to John for his suggestion with that part) and then to Mt Glorious.
this is where we ran into some trouble, there was a motorbike fatality and the road was closed so we weren't able to complete the full course.
The intention was to go to Fernvale and have lunch at the pub or grab a pie from the bakery.
We were thinking of going on to Collages crossing from there instead for a BBQ but that might make for a long day and a pie/pub lunch might be easier?
I think this should take us about 2 1/2 hours from Mt Coo-tha to Fernvale, and be around 150 -200 km.

Cruise dates

OK I'm thinking Sunday the 20th July as this suits most people.
I'll start from the Greenbank RSL and hook up with anyone from the deep south side or from the Coastal areas.
I will be there at
8.45am and leave at 9.00am then onto the Mobil servo at Oxley opposite the Oxley Hotel to meet with anyone else.
9.15am arrive at the Mobil, leave at 9.30.
Head up to Mt Cootha, turn left after the Botanical Gardens and head up the mountain, about 800 meters (1st chance to turn right) to meet at the car park on the right side of the road.
10.00am arrive, leave 10.30 sharp for the cruise up to the gap, Mt Nebo, Mt Glorious and on to Fernvale for lunch (A pie or lunch at the pub).
You can meet up with us anywhere along the way.

It should be a good day so bring the wife, kids and ya mates along too. If you OH is not quite ready then bring your daily driver.

I'm going to Fernvale on Sunday the 29th again for a look around so I'll report back during the week.

How does this sound?
Can I get a show of hands please...lol

The other end.

We were able to find time to shoot off to Fernvale this morning (13th July) and have a look around.
This is where the cruise will end and we can get a pie or something from the bakery, then have a good look at all the cars!
It's quite busy in the morning cause the markets are on but we should arrive after they end.

There is a kids play ground, some tables nearby and public toilets.

I was able to talk to the good staff of the Information centre about parking and they said we should be able to park about 35 cars in their car park and if need be they might be able to help us out if we need more, but that's not confirmed as yet (I'll call them on the day when we have a better idea on final numbers).

Hope to see you all there on the day.

Please take into account that participation is voluntary and at your own risk, as we will not be held liable for any damage or injury to property or persons and that we all act in a responsible manner to ensure our safety and the safety of others at all times.

Sunday Cruise

Guys,

Stumbled onto this site tonight, live at Sherwood and got my HR Ute registered last Monday. It s running like a pig and hs throw-out bearing noise issues, carby issues, blah, blah as she was off the road for 6yrs...BUT you have got me inspired to come along. Dependent on how the car goes, I'll be there at Oxley, baby blue HR ute.

I was heavily involved with the first cruisetime runs with the Monaro Club, but that was a lifetime ago, so well done on those who set this date.

Hope to have a chat, probably flying solo for the run

Regards

Brett

Sunday Cruise

Sam and Bruno,

Thanks for the warm support,

I have the all-clear from the cheese and kisses, however the daily driver will be what she will be driving on Sunday with the kids to all of their week-end sports (plus I wouldn't feel 'involved' in the cruise if I was driving in a diesel Peugeot wagon :)

I think I will get into the HR on Saturday and try to get her to some sort of reliable condition, but I think your mate with the 4WD will have to be in front of me on the decents for when my 1967 Holden '4WD' (four wheel drums) braking gets excited (just joking...I hope). I'll grab a good assortment of tools just to make sure nothing goes wrong (if I don't, something will of course).

Sorry to sound pessimistic, but I have been ripped off by several people along the way with this rebuild and am disappointed with the mechanicals as a result (among other things I have already started to fix).

So in short, I'll 98% guarantee my arrival at Ampol (hope you'll excuse the clutch noise etc), and hopefully also all the way to Fernvale on the other side of the climb.

Thanks again guys

Brett

P.S. My last resto was a HQ auto 81837 that I miss dearly!

Hi Sam
Glad to see this got off the ground. At the moment I'm a non starter. ( I'd probably be the only "Old Bee Emm Dubla"- oops.)
I know you'll have maps, but as you go up Macgregor Terrace stay to the left to get into Coopers Camp Rd which takes you down to Waterworks Rd. If you miss this just keep going and you will pick up Waterworks Rd. - No 31- just a couple of k's on. Just follow the Road Nos., you can't go wrong. This sound like I'm telling you how to suck eggs. Can someone take some pictures and maybe put an OH sign in name to a face?
Take it easy coming down the other side.
Have a good one.
John.

It's on for sunday the 20th!

Ok, Just to clarify the meeting point at Mt Coot-tha.
Once you go around the roundabout at the base of Coot-tha (end of the Western Freeway) and start heading up Mt Coot-tha Road you will go past the botanical gardens then turn left into Sir Samuel Griffith Drive, go up about 800mtrs and there is a turn right lane (1st turn right) that takes you into the car park that we will be meeting at. Ref map 158 and the meeting point is about G15.

As for the other end, we will be arriving at Fernvale about an hour and a half later.
The good people at the Fernvale Visitors Information Centre are going to allow us to park up on the grass (they will drop the chain for us) so we will be able to park in an orderly manner and not worry about them while we lob over to the bakery for a pie (they tell me they will have plenty).

It might turn out to be a mini show and shine, I'm sure a few OldHoldens will attract some interest from any tourists

I just had a look at the forecast and it says it will be fine on Sunday.
Bring some chairs, your camera and an esky and we will see everyone on Sunday.

Well said Bruno!
I felt a bit like a (grown, salt'n'pepper haired) kid visiting a new play-ground when pulling into the meeting place at Mt Coot-tha this morning. A swag of shiny old classic iron (& WB's heh heh!) and some mates who I'd never met.

A nice bit of road, some chuffed onlookers along the way, some great stories and characters and pleasingly few mechanical dramas made it a grand day for the Qld franchise/chapter/tribe of Old Holden.com

Bris cruise notes...

For those who I didn't get to mention it with last weekend - the pie shop's claim did not bear out in reality.

A mature local couple who wandered up to look over our cars said that the "Tastiest Pies In Australia" were indeed in that nearby store. Well, I had one* and have to encourage the good folk of Fernvale, Qld to bloody well get out a bit more! I've had pies far worse, but I've had nearly as many quite a bit better. I won't go into the gruesome thickener, pastry & gristle details....

Tony/Af'Sam, now that I'm back at uni, I won't be able to plan an entire cruise myself, but I've some ideas about a future cruise to pass on in case your interested. I just need to dig up some old road tour info before I get back to you.

HKing of D'Aguilar-Highway.

* In a fit of buy-local enthusiasm, I bought a variety of the highly recommended pies BEFORE eating the first one on the day.... Oh well.

I was waiting for that and I agree..

I have heard the ads on the radio all last week (100s of medals?) I'm sorry to say while we did do some home work on the cruise details, we didn't go and try a pie!

The best pies that I have ever tasted (we are going up for one today) is up at Tamborine Mt opposite the cuckoo clock place on Gallery Walk.
They have earned themselves a few medals over the years and they do deserve it! They are not the cheapest but they are the best!
I would like to head up there for one cruise but I'm afraid there is no where near enough parking for us all at one time,
So if you like your pies then that's the place to take a drive to.

If you want to email me Michael then please do, we can work on that cruise you thinking about?

Cheers
Tony

parking

im sure we would be able to arrange parking for 500+ cars if needed at the north tamborine showgrounds (aka bushrats footy field)
when the markets are on the sundays that they are, we can park on the field. there are a few other spots we can get probably 30 max. cars though.

my fav pie would have to be the big dad's special, nowhere is more consistantly awesome than the ones on wynnum road, but i will not hesitate to pick up and eat every crumb of a big dad's spesh no matter which shop i bought it from.

I'm keen for one of those

I'm keen for one of those pies tony so if its
possible to get some cars up there it would be good for the next cruise!
