Help! tail shaft bearing repair kit

Hi Guys,

Ive got VK V8 auto which needs bearings repaired in the tail shaft. Ive looked at just purchasing a new one from the wreckers however I cant seem to locate one in the Canberra or surrounding districts. Having it repaired by mechanics is insainly expensive so im looking at just purchasing a Bearing Repair Kit however im not real sure on how to install it. Does anyone know how to do this? or if anyone could point me in the direction of where I could find out it would really help!

tailshaft bearings

They are called "Universal joints" mate (there's a front and a rear set).
They retail for approx $25 per set and are quite easy to replace yourself although i'm going to leave it to someone with better communication skills to try explaining the procedure to you or perhaps a search in the Holdenpedia might uncover a work guide on how to do it.
If you farm the job out to a mechanic then he can hardly justify any more than an hour labour (to change both) and the price of the uni's.
Personally if i had to change a set, i'd do both sets at the same time.

Tailshaft bearing

I prosume you mean the centre bearing not the uni joints (sheez Dusty wake up :P ), If you remove the tailshaft yourself and take it in it should cost bugger all. I got my centre bearing, and both uni joints replaced with brand spankers for 80bux.

Bearing replacement in VK

Thanks for the tips, I know how to do the uni joints but im needing to replace specifically the CV joint in the tail shaft and im not real sure on how to do it or if its really possible to do at home.... if anyone knows how to please post a comment!

VK Tailshaft fixes

The uni's are cheap as has been said, and the Centre bearing is not too bad either, but my understanding is a quality CV joint is over $150 bucks. My recommendation is pay the money and have the professionals (like Driveline Services or similar) do the job. They will install everything as intended AND re-balance the shaft as well, something you could not do at home. I'll have a go at most things on my car but NOT Commodore tails shafts. Too much at stake if something goes wrong.
Cheers

Tailshaft

I agree with LMH, it is better just to pay someone to do it for you, though you can mark it and do it, but personelly id never do it, i did look at doing it with my brother inlaw (who is a mechanic) we got the tailshaft kinda apart and said bugger it, we will just pay someone.
VK Centre bearing on ebay Thats a GM one for 25 bux buy it now.

VK CV joint

Thanks guys, think I will just pay someone to fix the tail shaft for me..... Although if anyone knows of where I can pick up a second hand tail shaft I would be interested as i dont really wanna pay $480 to get it repaired.

VK tailshafts

V8 and 6cyl are different, theirs only 1 V8 one from memory, and 3 or 4 different 6 cylinder ones as I learnt the hardway.
I have a V8 one here that belongs to Campbell but im in vic to, IIRC your qld, and it would need rebalancing most likely?
Whos charging you $480 bux their definitly pulling your leg, i seriously paid 80 bux for the centre bearing (im prosuming this is the CV bearing) and both uni joints fitted and balanced. Shop around for sure, or post it down here with 480 bux and ill get it done and send it back haha (jokes).

Is that the green one. Or the orange one?
Either way. If it is in your garage it's yours.
I don't even own a Commodore. I have a HT van.
Cheers.

Campbell

Yeah its the green one, i have no use for it either now, ill just hang on to it, and pass it on to someone who needs it.

LMH - I didnt even think of that, that makes alot more snese :-)

the green one

That one's a V8 and has all been redone(and shouldn't need balancing).
If he is getting charged $400+ for a reco of his(and you have no use for it). See if he will sort out freighting it up to himself.
Cheers.

Campbell

I agree it shouldnt need rebalancing, but me and my brother inlaw did pull it apart to see if we could pinch the centre bearing and we didnt mark it, but we are pretty sure it went back the same way, so it wouldnt hurt to have it rebalanced.
If the original poster wants it, im happy to freight it to him.

rebalancing

As long as the uni joints are in their correct positions(relevant to each other). Checked against any other shaft. It will be sweet.
Cheers.

Centre bearing and CV are different

Bear in mind the centre bearing is what is holding the shaft up in the middle in that bracket you bolt up, and the CV is the thing that lets it bend, so they are 2 different parts. I've seen charges up $400 on a Commy shaft where everything was buggered. Both uni's, Centre bearing, and CV. Pretty expensive, but that's the way it goes when you play with old cars. I'm just grateful the bits are still around.

Must be the old age, but you could always blame the meds haha.
Nah the only reason i know theirs so many different tailshafts for VK's is caus i tried to fit 3 of the buggers before resorting to the manual to find out theirs 5 different ones all up.
3 different for 3.3L EST depending on your gearbox.
1 for EFI
1 for V8
All tailshafts are colour coded with a stripe to.

There is both a centre bearing and a CV joint.

In total there is ...

a front universal joint.

a centre bearing which supports the rear end of the front half of the tailshaft.

a CV Joint.

a rear universal joint.

vz tail shaft

sorry about this probably "stupid" question but i drive a vz commodore and how would i know if there is something wrong with my tail shaft??

vz tail shaft

If it looks bent there is probably something wrong with it.

but seriously, what are the symptons that make you think something is wrong?
