Dickheads anonymous

Being on the road a lot every week (I'm a truckie) I obviously see a lot of traffic, one thing that strikes me is how often you can tell when someone's going to do something stupid simply from the type of car they're driving.

Invariably it's a commodore in the VL to VS range (or Fords from the same era), lowered, tinted windows, set of rims, and more often than not... a P plate on display.
While I don't particularly care about speeding on it's own, changing three or four lanes at a go, tailgating, and generally aggressive behaviour are things I see quite often from drivers of these vehicles.
Some may say it's wrong to pidgeonhole ALL drivers of the afore-mentioned, but I'm speaking from personal experience and, unfortunately, it's been proven time and time again.

Now, I'm only a young driver myself (I'm 23) but as a truck driver I have to take a responsible and professional attitude when on the road - which means putting up with any amount of bad driving from other road users, particularly young, agressive drivers who seem to not understand the simple physics of a heavy vehicle and all it can entail if and when said physics come into play in the event of an accident.
One of the worst, and most often seen occurences, is cars diving in in front of trucks at traffic lights, NOT the smartest thing to do - a truck with a full load on, for all it's size may not have the braking capacity to be able to stop in that now-shortened distance.

Trust me, 35-45 tons doesn't stop on a dime, and if you want to know what your car will look like if shunted by that much weight, try crushing a grape between your fingers - you'll get the idea.
I'm not saying that all truckies are angels either, I know there's more than a few cowboys and [Naughty Pottyword]wits out there who shouldn't be driving them - but by the same token I see far more bad car drivers than truckies.

Nearly finished my little rant, did anyone else hear about that young bloke who got killed near fountain gate shopping centre yesterday morning?
Here's what I heard/know about it: Night, very wet, P-Plater, Late model ute, hit power pole and killed.

Why am I not surprised?

Yeah its quite easy to see aint it?
Lowered, low profile tyres, tinted windows beyond legal tint, p plate and a chrome fart pipe...
all the rage around epping/thomastown.
and all drive as if they own the road.

ive been driving for 10 years now, mostly city traffic and it never ceases to suprise me the risks they take.

Never Drive A Car Younger Than Yourself!

yea yea i agree, [Naughty Pottyword] p platers. but more importantly, how much hp does your truck have? and wat type, make, size is it? that was my boyhood dream job, driving for a living! in a big ass prime mover no-less. but being only 23 that truck cant possibly be yours right? you must be partners/sharing with the owner as those things cost more than a decent house and truckies usually spent half there career just payin the [Naughty Pottyword]er off!

anyways dont get fat :)

No you're right, it's a company truck.

I'm currently driving a Mack Titan with 470 Horses under the bonnet and christ knows how much torque pulling a tri-axle pan loaded with meat.
If you want to be a truck driver gotta love to drive trucks - which I do - because ya do some huge hours in em, 12-15 hours is a regular day at the office.

Funny you say this - I have always noticed when I come across an inconsiderate and brainless driver its always a Commodore, even the standard Commodores. Why is it? Is it a certain personality who buys them or what?

i believe there was a mention in the news the day about some kid, i think it was in syd, a p plater, was supposed to pull over for an rbt. He ran, police gave chase and he was caught after abandoning his vehicle and hiding in someones backyard.

i believe the car was a commodore!

come to think of it.. i was pulled once for an rbt. a commodore was pulled over. Hotted up car, DRUnken driver. i heard the police say he was multiples over the limit and his car was impounded. i remember the threats he made to the police about taking his car away from him.

fair enough comment Torque: but be careful when generalising. I have had a MANY bad experiences with trucks generally being idiots, cutting me off or just changing lanes whether i'm there or not. but i wouldn't say all truckies are bad drivers, or: 'why am i not suprised when yet again another truckie cleans up a car or 2.' comments like that..hmmm.

on the whole i agree that many commodore p-platers are very dangerous drivers and take far too many risks, however from what i have heard on this site many people are not adverse to speeding or burnouts etc... and drive many different cars: this behaviour IS disgraceful. But, my mum drives a turbo VL, i drive it occassionally: neither of us have ever had a speeding ticket in that car: have to respect it. I think it may be something about young males generally...

for the other 2 'holden fans'
but its not always a badly driven commodore, and comments like '[Naughty Pottyword] p-platers' are really helpful yeah you two sound intelligent 'holden fans' pfft

paranoid (not a p-plater, and don't usually drive a commodore)

As I've already said, I don't want to pidgeonhole a certain type of car/driver but I've seen it happen time and time again, that type of vehicle showing that kind of behavior. Bit hard not to form a bias.

Also as previously stated: "I'm not saying that all truckies are angels either, I know there's more than a few cowboys and [Naughty Pottyword]wits out there who shouldn't be driving them..."

Yeh, I've seen plenty of ricers behaving like dickheads too - but one pretty much expects that.

i myself am a p plater, i drive a 82 VH commodore, tinted, soon to be lowered and have mags and whatnot. I havnt lost 1 point since ive had my licence, and i sure as [Naughty Pottyword] dont intend to. Its only the little rich faggot kids whos daddys by them their first car so they treat it like [Naughty Pottyword]. I love my car and dont appreciate all the "[Naughty Pottyword] p-platers and young commodore drivers" [Naughty Pottyword]. Were not all like that and its the ones that are that give us the bad name.

Cheers

i'm a p-plater and i drive a HR ute, and i would have to agree that Some people who drive early model commodores are dickheads on the road, however there are a lot of stupid ricers out there who think that they are top [Naughty Pottyword] in their crapbox 180sx's or other crap rice burner and do risky things when driving.

as an owner of an early model commodore, and having my p plates, i recon that altho, on the whole, p pplaters who drive commodores drive like [Naughty Pottyword]wits, it doesnt even go near warrenting a comment like, '[Naughty Pottyword] p platers'. i have almost been in at least ten serious accedents, and, absolutley zero of them, could have been my fault. its overconfidence and hostility, combined with the lack of experience that causes accidents. unfortunatley, people, like me, with not much money, get a commodore cause there cheap, and cause the people are dickheads, they drive like dickheads. not cause thhey are driving a commodore, or cause they have their p plates.
chill, scott.

The fact that there are so many commodores going around means that that there would be more dropkick commodore drivers comparead to a car thats less common... All relative, you often see a person in a commodore do something stupid you've probably seen the same percentage of drivers in another type of car do the same.. but the fact that there are more commodores going around you notice it more

Just annoys me when people generalise so much... (i drive a kingswood :))

I see all of the above on a regular basis...p-platers(not just in commodores) open licence holders, volvo drivers, truckies, push bike riders and the list goes on....in the scheme of things it is only a small minority when you consider the population and the amount of cars on the road...and there has been times when a truckie has cut me off and there has been times when a volvo driver has cut me off and so on...I just dont worry about it so much anymore...because sooner or later the coppers could be just waiting around the next corner and i wont be the one receiving de-merit points!!!

GO THE HQ's!!!!!!!!!

yeah im a p plater, being 21 i should be off em by now but i was a little late off the mark, i got a bike license when i was 17 so i didnt bother getting my L's till then too, so far i have had no fines, but 2 accidents, i know excuses excuses, the first was when a ricer pulled out in front of me and i cleaned him up (not my fault but coz i hit him... it was) and the second (MY FAULT) i had been driving all day, wasnt paying attention and drove through a red light.. got T-Boned!! i was pretty pissed off and did the cool, not my fault thing till i saw the guy get his 2 week old baby out of the car... then it hit me that YES im a dickhead.... so guys just remember, just coz you have your P's doesnt mean you can drive like a god! it only means that your capable of learning without mummy and daddy sitting next to you... it all comes down to experiance! and yes accidents do happen, if you cause it is it really an ACCIDENT???
learn from your mistakes....

Its Not That I Hate People,
I Just Feel Better When They're Not Around!

Yeah well I'm also a P-plater...and it seems alot of people my age who own commodores seem to think there invincible, well most of them anyway (there are the good ones). Now I live in central vic and when ever I drive to work (60km away)and there's a commodore following me they seem to think they have to overtake it doesn't matter that I'm doing the speed limit, they have to over-take (85-90% are P-platers. And it's not jusy them though there's the other drivers who seem to think they also have to over take you (these are suppose to be the experienced ones)....Well thats my whinge for day.
Anyway I agree with tool, I to have had an accident (hit a tree at 90km on a very muddy road....thank god for seatbelts), but I think that has set me straight for a atleast a while. You guys may not believe me but I don't speed (if anything I go slower). Anyway for all you other P-platers if you wanna speed and race your friends go to the drags, leave the road for normal safe driving.

I'm too on my P's, (only one year to go). I rekon it is fair to generalise, most P-platers drive like [Naughty Pottyword]'n idiots and i too was one of them, i think to generalise about the commodore drivers is wrong though. My first car was a beaten up datsun 200b in which i managed to drive at excesive speeds while overtaking around corners, it's not about the car, it's the attitude. It only took me a few months to get out of the idiot stage, which i mostly atribute to the novelty of being able to drive also being fueled by mates in the back seat. With a few close calls it soon wakes you up and i chose to tone my driving down and be sensible and i take offence to the '[Naughty Pottyword] P platers" comment, yea i have done my fair share of stupid things on the road, but i have learn't from my mistakes and close calls and i'm still a P-plater and can probaly drive as good if not better than some people that hold a full licence!!!!!

Cheers

wazdog

P.S i know exactly how ya feel in your truck with dickheads pulling iun front of you, when i tow my 1 and a half tonne boat around (not quite a truck i know) and some dickhead pulls in front of me at the lights after i have begun to pull up it can sometimes be touch and go on whether i'm gonna clean the prick up, [Naughty Pottyword]'n annoy's me!!!

seems like theres more of us p platers here then i thought there were,
i too am one of the scorned, yes i have done my fair share of idiotic stunts since i got my licence, but isnt it the same when you are first able to drink, some people will go out and have a few and thats it whilist others will get s@#t faced simply because now they can, its a phase and yes we grow out of it, we were all p-platers once (or similar for the real oldies) and im sure that pretty much all of us at one stage has ripped it up, lost it and had the absolute s@#t scared out of em, its all about learnig, being a couple of months off getting off my p's ill admit that now i can see more the idiotic behaviour of my friends who are only just getting theirs, i too believe that not all p platers are maniacs, it really depends on how many dickheads are in the backseat goading you on and how much tolerance you have before you give in to them, i could go on and on about this subject, the time i got run off the road by a truck, how when a p plater pulls over to give someone whos broken down a hand they are given a "what the" look, but hey, no ones perfect, the p is there to allow people to know that this person is still learning and will probably do something stupid as they dont know better or havent learnt better yet,

Remember I'm only 2 years out of Ps meself - and yes, like everyone before us, we've all done something stupid in our youth.

Mine was doing fishtails on a dirt road @ 100 kays - fun... until I lost control and rolled the panelvan. Fortunately I walked away without a scratch but spent the next 12 months patching the van back up - taught me a lesson, I haven't had another serious accident since then.

Everyone will do dumb things in their driving life, you're either bull[Naughty Pottyword]ting or not human if you say you don't - the point is whether you learn from such mistakes.
The smart ones will learn, the dumb ones will end up wrapped around a tree.

Around this part of town , The worst drivers by FAR are in My Age group 35-45 !

Too arrogant & seem to reckon they are good drivers due to having 15+ years experience.

Invariably they are normally driving NEW Fords or Commodores ( Likely company cars ) & are usually the same idiots who will sit up your rear & try to push you over the speed limit !

Also 99% of Road Rage incidents I've seen appear to have been started by Older drivers .

As for Drink Driving , Well the figures tell the story there 30->45 is the Highest group getting caught here in Melbourne .

Just my 10 Cents worth !
